uechi kid Posted May 26, 2011 #1 Posted May 26, 2011 What type and brand of oil is everyone using in their final drive? Can you use a multi viscosity oil? I had a difficult time finding SAE 80 GL-4.
Freebird Posted May 26, 2011 #2 Posted May 26, 2011 I use this. Have been using it for probably 10 years. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_1_Fully_Synthetic_Gear_Lube_75W-90LS.aspx
uechi kid Posted May 26, 2011 Author #3 Posted May 26, 2011 I saw that one at the store but it said it was API GL-5 not API GL-4. I don't know what the difference is.
uechi kid Posted May 26, 2011 Author #8 Posted May 26, 2011 And it really only takes just under 7 oz?
N3FOL Posted May 28, 2011 #11 Posted May 28, 2011 I run the SuperTech 80W140 regular oil now. Yep, I saw that 80W140 at Walmart as well as the 75W90 SuperTech. Athough Yamaha does not list 80W140, I am tempted to use it on my next gear oil change sometime this weekend. How long have you used the 80_140 on your bike so far?
N3FOL Posted May 28, 2011 #12 Posted May 28, 2011 I double checked my gear oil weight that is in the garage and it is 80W90 weight. The 75W145 looks to be a little heavier, but I am inclined to give it a try.

Ive had it in there for about 10,000 miles give or take. I usually change the final drive oil every or every other engine oil change depending on my mood. 1qt of gear oil will do 8 oil changes in the final drive.
