Hi

Freebird, mine is a 1998 650cc VStar (in Europe is called Drag Star). I bought it about a year ago at a quite good price and it doesn't worth a try changing the clutch basket. The owner at the local Yamaha service (I trust him, because I know him years ago) says he can change it but the whine can come back with the new basket.

Probably in no more than a year I'll be riding a XVS 1100, so I will live with that noise.

SilverT, I'm glad my whine make yours a silent bike but believe me, in the video is even quieter than on the bike. But to be honest, if I stay on the floor and any other rides the bike near me, the whine can hardly be heard. So I think the windshield has a lot to do amplifying the noise.

That's a very good point. It would be interesting to hear from those on an RSTD that claim they have the whine... if it's as noticeable when they remove the w/s.

Also, my wife claims she can't hear it at all, sitting behind me. (What woman hears their own whine??) :witch_brew: :rotfl:

I have found one thing that worked for awhile on my 84' and has worked for 02 RSV. motul semi synthetic 10w40, 3-5 thou kms the squell starts, time for an oil change anyway. I'm not saying it's end all be all but it has worked for me.

Actually Snarley Bill did this test a long time ago when he had his RSTD. If I'm not mistaken he said the sound almost went away completely.

When I got my Clearview the sound changed noticeably. Not saying that it decreased as much as it changed. There was a very high pitch component to the chirp on mine. It was the thing that I found most objectionable. When I got the taller clearview, with the re-curve, that component either went away or was reflected elsewhere. The chirp is definitely not as killer to me now as it used to be.

So, what I'm saying is that the windshield DOES make some difference.

I have posted my thoughts on this before but will do so again. I found that on certain days or conditions my 'Jensens chirp' would almost unbearable. It seemed to be the way the wind was blowing etc. Also, by moving my body forward or rearward on the seat and by moving my head I could intensify the sound or almost make it go away. Unfortunately those positions were not very comfortable for very long. Eventually, I did replace my clutch basket with the 'I' model and 80% of the noise went away. There are still days, however, that it seems more noticeable than others.

I just put a Clearview on about 2 weeks or so back and although it is probably coincidence, I seem to be noticing the whine more. hmmmmm.... maybe it's tellin me it's time for an oil change? LOL

I do believe there are a combination of factors at play here. I've noticed that ambient temperature has a good deal to do with it as well. On cooler/colder days/mornings the chirp doesn't seem to be as bad as on hotter days. My guess is that, as the oil thins, the chirp gets worse. Strictly a guess and what I've experienced on my bike.

I have an 06 RSTD. It has some whine and Jetsons chirp. Prior owner had the dealer put a basket in it. Windshield on is louder than windshield off. I wear a full face helmet and with the faceshield up you can hear it more that with it down. Louder when its hot out. I can tell you it doesn't whine at all when going through the mountains in third gear :-). In general if its whining you need to down shift. While it looks like a cruiser you can't drive it like one.

Went to my local dealer to transfer warranty, no problem there. Asked service mgr about whine, he agrred that it was anoying. Asked him about I basket he said that at their shop the ONLY thing that got rid of whine was working on or replacing the rear end. Going to make an appointment to have it checked out. He also stated that Yamaha only replaces rear end in about 50% of the cases submitted.

yes i had to change the rear end in mine to , but the wine is gone.. yamaha said that they put some kind of grease in the rear end bairings that was suppose to make them last longer .. but what they didnt know is that it would eat up the rear end... they replaced mine:bluesbrother:

i have a 06 and mine realy had a bad whine.. took it to the shop and found out that it was the rear end... in the 06s yamaha put some special grease on the rear end bearing... said that it would make the bearings last longer , but what they didnt know is that the grease would eat up the pinion gear...they put a whole brand new rear end in mine and now i do not have a whine at all... if it is under warranty... bring it in and yamaha will replace it .. :mytruck1:

That's fine IF it's the rear end that's whining. If it's the clutch basket, then replacing the rear end won't make any difference IMHO.

True. But, some of the final drives have come from Japan with frightful whines. My 97 RSTD was horrible. I picked up the bike, brand new, from dealer in Austin, TX, got about a mile before I knew something was awfully wrong. After some back and forth Yam sent a final out from CA that they took off one of their "test bikes" (so the tech rep said) and that final was silent running. Talking to him, he admitted that Japan had screwed up and allowed quite a few finals to leave the factory improperly set up. I've encountered two other owners with the same problem. In each case the dealers had told them the whine from the final is "normal" but they couldn't live with it.

The clutch basket whine is different. The final whine is not universal, but the clutch basket whine is. Best cure IMO is a good set of earbuds and a music player.

I ride with a gal that rides a Star 950. The whine that comes from her bike when she takes off from a start would make me go buy a different bike. My wife's Star 650 has a similar whine but .of as loud. I think It's a Yamaha thing.

Took bike into shop finally, the shop manager called today and said it was the clutch and not the rear end. When I first went in to transfer warranty he told me that it had to be the rear end and his shop had never fixed a whine by replacing the clutch. I tried to tell him about this forum and what everyone on here had said. Long story short they are putting in a I basket next week.

hope it works for you. Ask to see the " I " stamp on the back of the basket before they install it. My dealer said they were putting an I basket in and I found out later it was a G basket. I made them correct their mistake.

There's LOTS of info here on the site about the clutch basket and specifically the I-basket.

I have an 06 had real bad whine had a dealer replace the clutch basket with the "I" basket now it only whines when down shifting but pull in the clutch and it stops. One would think if it was the clutch gears they are enguaged all the time so why does it stop when the clutch releases, pressure released from the teeth....

There has been a long-running problem with final drives making a fierce whine. Yam replaced the final on my 97 RSTD for that reason.

The clutch whine is a different animal.

I wish there was a way to identify each type of "whine" being produced by a bike like this. Probably from the engine/tranny alone there are at least a half-dozen whines, from the clutch, the valve train, the alternator, fuel pump, waterpump, etc. Then there is the final drive. The tires. Lord knows what else. All these whines glom together into one wild and woolly whine.
