GunnyButch Posted November 30, 2007 #1 Posted November 30, 2007 I'm considering a GXM30 XM reciever for my Zumo550 for Christmas. If anyone has one I had a few questions. 1.The web site says it needs a clear path to the southern sky. Any problems with signal loss regarding direction of travel or riding conditions (overcast, wooded or forested areas etc) 2. It appears the mount has a magnetic base. Where is yours mounted? I was thinking somewhere on the front somewhere. 3. How large is the GXM30 unit? 4. How satisfied are you with it? Thanks
BuddyRich Posted November 30, 2007 #2 Posted November 30, 2007 I have it. IF its mounted to low your body may interfere when traveling north west. I like it. Its about 3 inchs wide. The magnet is just not strong enough but it comes with a mounting plate and I just used velcro on it
Guest sargeb13 Posted November 30, 2007 #3 Posted November 30, 2007 of a -30 on my '06 RSV in my gallery. I've since moved the thing to velcro mount on top of the radar box. Very, very rare cut-outs in real heavy thick woods; but like I said, very rare. Hoon Hardware makes a mount that fits behind a ram mount: that's what the -30 pictured in my gallery is sitting on. Here is a neat custom mount (on a pole at the back of the bike: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/IBRB/ It's a great accessory. Get it. Michael
Guest TFD69 Posted November 30, 2007 #4 Posted November 30, 2007 I got one with my Garmin Street Pilot 2730 in 2006, It's about the size of a standard hockey puck. I made my own base but you can purchase one from cyclegadgets.com that mounts on your ram mount bracket behind the GPS. The GM 30 has a magnetic base with holes in the base for two mounting screws for better security and to discourage theft. I've ridden both coast lines of North America, through the Rocky Mountains from British Columbia down to Arizona and the eastern mountain range from Vermont to Georgia. With 75,000 km. on the Gm 30 I've lost signal (only temporarily) maybe 5 times. The unit works on line of sight with the satellites centrally stationed above North America. The only problem I can see, is if you plan to operate one of these units in a stationary position in a location that is blocked. In other words the XM signal is stronger than you could ever get with a FM/Am receiver.(IMHO) Enjoy
GunnyButch Posted November 30, 2007 Author #5 Posted November 30, 2007 Thanks guys for all the information.
BEER30 Posted December 1, 2007 #6 Posted December 1, 2007 I made a mount of Kydex , which is molded on my mirror mast using velcro to secure the GXM-30 . Signal strength is great , even in my garage ! Only time I lost signal was under one of the huge gas pump roof and it was a huge metal roof ! I have both XM Radio and Satellite Weather . I first got radio and 2 days later got the weather . It was nice when I did call to subscribe (2 day later) to weather that XM waived the activation fee , made weather my primary ($9.+change) and made radio subscription my secondary at $6.+change . So far I an very satisfied with the unit + XM + Weather . BEER30
Pilot Posted December 1, 2007 #7 Posted December 1, 2007 Anyone try it under the front cowling? I'm asking because both my wifes car and my truck work when they are in the garage with the door closed and you can't see the sky inside the garage. You can buy an indoor antenna for XM radios in the house. Curious minds want to know........
