OK...I have read some other threads, but I am hoping for an easier fix than some that I have found. (I am lazy and want to ride not wrench:))

I laid my bike down today, I was going up a driveway with huge ruts (ditches really) and my front tire slide into one and I slowly laid the bike down. (in my defense it was really steep and the ruts were like ditches). After recovering from my embarrassment (well mostly) I had a crack faring piece (which is no problem to fix...been there done that). I start home sad but knowing I could fix what I broke..UNTIL I tried to shift into 4th gear.

I can shift from first to third (and into neutral) with no problems at all, but trying to go into 4th doesn't happen...it is like trying shift up again if you are in 5th (don't ask me who I know that)

It was a fairly gentle lay down the damage to the fairing is more due to the weight of the bike and than the impact. So any idea on what the problem might be? And what I am looking at to fix it? I haven't opened anything up yet... won't have time till Monday, so I am looking for ideas for easy and quick fixes.

When it was on its side, one of the pins in the shift cam segment probably fell out.

Only fix is to open it up and fix.

1st picture attached is of the new and old style segments. You most likely have the one on the right. One or more of the tabs has straightened out and allowed pin to fall out.

2nd picture is what it looks like with clutch removed.

3rd is what it looks like with clutch still in.

4th is another view of old & new segments.

5th is with shifter linkages installed.

I was afraid that was whatthe answer was I was hoping not to have to open things up, but it looks like I have something to do on Monday now:whistling:

I may be back looking for more help, I am not too great at the mechanic thing. So any words of advice that anyone has, I am listening!

This got me to thinking.

I currently have the powerplant out of my 93. Tackling several projects at once and even though it's a lot of work to remove the engine, that will give me much more workspace and ease of access for everything.

As part of this process I am giving the entire outer engine a thorough cleaning/degreasing and in so doing the whole thing has been rotated and manipulated into any number of positions: right side up, left side up, bottom side up, diagonal, sideways, upways, downways, etc. I've been careful not to jar anything... all the tipping has been cautious and gentle. But I didn't give a whole lot of thought to what might happen when it's on its side or upside down- is it likely that things could fall out of place inside the transmission and I'd not know it til I got everything back on/in bike and then discovered a similar issue? Would that be more likely to happen during a more "violent" tipping such as being laid down or falling over? I'd be pretty aggravated with myself if I had to tear everything all apart again for that reason.

:sign yeah that:,plan to replace the shift segment with a new model type that Gary shows. Also order new pins, long and short. Easy fix, hardest finding tools for removing the clutch basket.

Just to get going is an easy fix. with the bike on the side stand you don't even have to drain the oil. Just take the clutch cover off. find the pin that is out and put it back in then bend the holder back into place. If you are carefull you may not even mess up the gasket on the clutch cover. The unit can be rotated by hand so with a little luck you won't have to remove the clutch. Now after saying that it is a good idea to eventually replace that shift mechanism with a newer version from a late model V-Max. The only real problem I had was getting the screw out of the middle that holds it on. It has loctite on it.

That is encouraging, I need to change the oil anyway so draining it is not a big deal.

I didn't think about the gasket. I will try to be careful with it. (Local stealer is close on Mon. Even if they have it in stock) I would like to get away as cheap as possible as money is tight right now so not buying parts sounds good.

Thanks for all the help! Back on the road with all 5 gears again. Didn't replace anything, just put the pin back in and bent the bracket back to hold it in. Might replace it eventually, but I am back on the road and happy as can be!
