Dumb question ie CB radio

I've never used the CB in the 2 years I've owned the RSV and haven't used one in a vehicle since the 70s. In about a month I'm taking 3700 mile trip and thought I might want to use it for road and weather conditions. So do MC riders have a channel they monitor or do you have to put up with all the trucker chatter interrupting my music?

I have heard that in general motorcycles use Channel 1. Star touring tends to use channel 2 and the local Wing group uses Channel 8.

I would make a mental note of the channels I and others have mentioned, and try them if you see a large group going by. Otherwise, stay on channel 19 to hear the truckers, keep up with traffic and police. You may get tired of all the junk after a while, but for the most part, 19 is still where you want to be to keep informed on the road.

Remember to play with your Squelch from time to time. you want it set so that the constant white noise just goes away and then maybe a bit more. For maximum range (hearing, Squelch has nothing to do with output) leave the noise on all the time, but again, you won't want to do that for long. :shock3: Typical range is 2-3 miles at the most for a stock CB, Yea, in some conditions it might be more, but motorcycles have a poor ground plane, so they don't get out very far, expect a mile or two max to get to someone, and you might hear others for 2 to 3 miles. Then there are the "skip' people, they usually whistle into the mic, and use very high power units to talk sometimes to other countries, mostly on clear days. You won't be able to talk to them, and they can be quite annoying.:bang head:

CB can be entertaining, but try to stay out of any fights. Sometimes people on CB that get angry will go looking for you, so if someone is being a jerk, be sure to NOT identify yourself (I am on the Yellow WING) will put a target on your back sometimes. Other times if people are nice, and you get along, you can tell them who you are and have a nice talk. IF you do get chatty, consider going off 19 to another channel, finish the conversation and then go back to 19.

Also, be courteous to others and don't hog the channel. (you will run into others that are NOT following this rule, my fav is the jerk that likes his music and keys his mic so you can enjoy his favorite song...over and over. :stickpoke:Or the guy (usually a guy) that just talks and never quits. Hope they are going the other direction and will be out of range in a few minutes!

Don't be put off by the above, I love CB and use it a lot, but if it gets to you, shut it down and listen to your thoughts or music. :cool10:
