Left the house 6:00am for work this morning and got about 3/4 mile when a big doe ran out in front of me. I hit her about 50-55 mph.She hit into the fairing and then rolled up onto the saddle bag and back seat.I got lucky and kept the bike up. And as best i can tell didnt get a scratch on the bike..Some blood and alot of hair. She got up and ran into the woods.Put a good scare into me and certainly could have been bad. Thanks Chris:fingers-crossed-emo

My worst fear too...I've seen my share on the road and I hope I donKt have to deal with them.

This time of the year, I try to stay on the main roads ...Ride Safe.

Glad to hear no significant damage to your bike and yourself.

Amazing Chris that you didn't go down or do more damage to you or your Venture. This is one of my worst fears, but I have been lucky so far - no hits. I see you drive for a living. Any comments on how you were able to avoid a wreck?

I hit one last year, just outside of Red Lodge, Mt. just before sunset. She mashed my fender down onto the tire, twisted the running light and I lost a lens and visor off the T-signal. Only hit her at about 15-20 mph, hard on the brakes with trailer in tow and the Mrs. on the back.

Spun the deer around and off she trotted into the woods with my visor planted in her side. Never did find it. We were a bit shaken, but ok.

Happened so fast there wasn't much time to react.

not sure which is worse, yours trying to jump on the back, or the one I hit with a gl1200 about 4 years ago. smacked square on going 50. up onto the front wheel, then ride em cowboy over it with both wheels. kept that one up, dog years early took me down on a 400.

welcome to the "hit a deer and kept it up club", much better club to be in than the didn't keep it up club. I unfortunately am a member of both :(

I'm not sure I'm right about this,,,, but my thinking is to hit it with all you've got. The more you hit the animal with,(not saying you should go after it) the more your weight in the contest,,,,, now we all know that the more weight usually takes the least hit, so to speak. So according to my instructors at the MC course, don't hit the brakes, roll on the throttle instead and keep it straight. Their favorite saying was: the throttle is your friend.

Last year a coon run out in front of me, and that was my reaction, ran over that critter like a little bump in the road,,, I know, it's not a deer and it's only one coon, but I was pleased non the less.

Glad to hear you came out of this unscathed.

Well it happened so fast i know i did hit the brakes. The brakes are what almost put me down. The impact from her head to the fairing was pretty hard.I got thru the impact pretty stable but after impact the brakes at that point i almost lost it. I thnk Carl is right if you can roll the throtle instead of reacting with braking on a glancing shot you maybe better off. Now if you hit one in the middle i cant say what is the best move. When i did get stopped i expected the fairing to be cracked but nothing but blood and snot. The back was loaded with hair. I hope this experience may be of help to some that may find themselves in a similar fix. Chris

Deer must be some darn stupid animals. Especially Texas deer! I was on my way back from a visit back east and riding down a wonderful twisty hilly state hwy west of Austin. I didn't see another vehicle the entire 30 miles and the highway was in terrific condition. I was having a great time! However, it was almost sundown when I spotted a doe on the side of the road ahead. I slowed and honked my horn and the deer looks up and immediately crosses the road in front of me. This happened 4 more times in the next few miles and each time the deer would cross the road rather than turn tail and run away from the road. I reached the Interstate just as the sun was setting and found evidence of several deer that had not been so fortunate. Dang stupid deer!

I hit a deer in 93. I was on a Suzuki gs550l. Spent 2 days in the hospital and within a week had the bike fixed and was riding again. Now I ride bigger bikes, better chances for me to keep it up.

What brand of armored fairing do you use? Think I may want one. Shaun

I have never hit a deer with the bike, YET.

I have hit a few with my truck. They were still delicious.:whistling:

One thing that I have noticed is that if you hit the horn and scare them, they run in whatever direction they are pointed. So if they are on the side of the road looking at you, guess which way they will go if your horn scares them. Just a vehicle does not bother them, that is normal, vehicles have going up and down that road all of their lives, they expect that. But when something unexpected happens like a loud horn they just start running.

What I have found is that if you just leave then alone they will just stand there and watch you go by like they have done to a thousand other vehicles.

Now if the deer is already running cuz something in the woods spooked them, there is almost nothing that you can do to change their speed or course.

That's not true, I have found, many times. that a 30.06 will most definatly change their course and speed! :cool10: :rotf: It changes them into the main course.... Yum
