Rear end noise when backing or pushing

I'm sure this is a quick one for some of you,,,

 

I got a rear end noise in the last few days.

With engine off, simply backing the bike or pushing it forward I hear a creaking noise like a old wood ship or a door. It's variable but repeats as you push the bike. It sounds like it is coming from the rear end, left side of wheel.

 

Is this simply a need to grease the rear end?

If so, can you put me on a link to do it?

(Also, is it rideable or park it till it's fixed.)

Sounds like the pins need grease. It is still rideable, but get it taken care of as soon as you can.

 

Take off the rear wheel. The hub that links up to the final drive will be on the side opposite the brake rotor. There is a snap ring at the top of this hub. Remove the snap ring and pull the hub straight up. You will see the (dry) pins. Lube with Honda Moly 60. Reassemble and ride.

 

I lube these pins every rear tire change. While you have it apart, lube the splines on the hub going into the rear drive with the Moly 60.

Absolutely agree...mine started at 870 miles while backing it in the shed. Plenty of Moly grease on the drive pins will fix it right up.

Thanks guys,

Found a) "rear wheel removal" under tires/suspension

and b) "lube rear end" under engine & drive train in the 2nd gen tech library.

 

Pretty sure that is what is making the noise.

I will toss in another item.

 

If you don't have a decent snap ring plier, use this as an opportunity to add to your tools. It you take this snap ring out with screwdrivers/mechanics picks/etc., you will likely bend the snap ring. Removing it with good snap ring pliers will save this snap ring to be used again.

 

Any excuse is a good excuse to add to the tool box.

I will add that cleaning and lube where the pins insert is also recommended. I found that a 20ga. shotgun cleaning brush and wd40 does a great clean up job.
