Ignition Switch Warranty

I'm about to have my ignition switch replaced again (44K miles). The first time was around half that mileage. The first time Yamaha also paid for redoing the locks on the saddlebags, trunk & helmet locks. This time they'll fix the ignition, but, said they won't do the other part. This really annoys me. They wanted to know how this has happened twice to me, never to anyone else. They think I must carry a wad of keys. I don't. Only the bike key, not even on a key ring. I don't want to carry 2 keys &, yes, I know I can have 1 key cut on one side for the ignition & the other side for the saddlebags, etc. That is what I will most likely do, as it's the cheapest way to solve the problem for me. Regardless, I still think Yamaha should fix the problem at their expense under warranty.

 

I guess I'm looking for advice. Thanks in advance for any insight.

I have the "one key - two sides" situation on both bikes. But in your situation, can't the dealer re-key the newest switch to your "old" key, or as some have suggested, just replace the switch(bottom) part and reuse the lock set (top part).

 

Oh and BTW it would be a good time to get your headlight and passing lights(if installed) hooked to a relay, which will take the lighting load off the ignition switch.

if i remember right there is two screws on the bottom of the old ignition switch. after u remove the ignition switch remove the two screws and put the same key to the new switch

The lock set is what has gone bad both times. It becomes harder & harder to get the key to turn. I know it's not the key because it works perfectly on everything else. Maybe what they did the first time was key the new ignition to the old key. The dealer says the had a locksmith come in to do that. This time Yamaha said wouldn't do that. It would cost about $85, so, the cheaper way to go is to double cut a new key. It just really bugs me that they aren't willing to pay for the fix like the first time. My warranty is up at the end of the month, so, they'll never have to do it again anyway. Pretty cheap attitude, IMHO.

You try any graphite in it yet. If its not too late. Anyway you should use only graphite in locks. I was told this by a locksmith many years ago. Been doing it ever since and never had a problem.
