Stache Posted May 4, 2011 #1 Posted May 4, 2011 The guy that wrote the RSTD manual, or translated it from the Japanese, or whoever put those shift points in the book. Ok. I admit it. I'm a fairly anal guy. I do read the manual, follow the reccomendations, etc, etc. I used to ride a V-Star 950 cruiser, nimble and quick, but when I rode with the local yamaha association last year the Ventures and RSTDs would make me work to keep up. This year I traded up, carefully rode the beast home, read the owners manual carefully, and started riding, using the reccomended shift points. Felt like I was driving a truck. Weak acceleration, sounds like it's working hard just to get going. WTF? The guys must have modified the engine the get the acceleration I was seeing last year? Then I found this forum. Read all the threads about shift points I could find. I'm still in break-in. 600 km and climbing rapidly. I haven't cranked it as hard as some suggest, for that reason, but, oh my, can this thing fly. Still not as nimble as my last bike, but pull? Loving it! Loving it! Loving it!
Marcarl Posted May 4, 2011 #2 Posted May 4, 2011 Ya you must have bought a 2nd gen,,,,, now if you had bought a 1st gen, you wouldn't be posting here,,, you'd still be trying to find your way home from the long ride... Welcome to the forum.
BoomerCPO Posted May 4, 2011 #3 Posted May 4, 2011 Enjoy the ride! It gets better as ya go. I'm coming up on 60K with my Venture and it still runs like a scalded ape with a road flare stuck up its a$$. Boomer....who sez having a 1st Gen iz like owning a set of Tupperware and yer always losing parts of the set.
YamaDuck Posted May 4, 2011 #4 Posted May 4, 2011 Give it the RPM's. Just when you get to where you think it will blow up crank the throttle and hang on.
Dave77459 Posted May 4, 2011 #5 Posted May 4, 2011 When you are comfortable with it, try cranking on until you reach the rev limits, then shift. I found I was shifting far too early, coming from a v-twin. Hitting the rev limiter through at least third gear will give you an idea of what the bike is capable of doing. "I don't suggest doing this on anything but a race track though, because you will be traveling at supralegal speeds." Dave
pegscraper Posted May 4, 2011 #6 Posted May 4, 2011 Yup, that's what having an overdrive gear does, make all the rest of them too high too. Think of this bike as having gears two through six of a six speed transmission, and not having a first gear at all so it's back to five gears. When you get rolling in first gear, mentally tell yourself that you are already in second gear and don't shift up until you would normally shift out of second. And the same on up the line. It's a whole different bike then.

With all those 2nd Gens back there they can pick up a few parts since they aren't doing anything else:whistling:
Snaggletooth Posted May 5, 2011 #8 Posted May 5, 2011 You might find this read interesting. Kind of blows the old school train of thought out the window, but it works. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm Mike
