I've read up on a couple of threads on Cold Blooded for after my VR sat for 5 days it had a very tough time starting and to keep running and getting warmed up. It must have taken 5 minutes or more for the temp gage to just start moving up. I did not ride it but let it warm up to normal operating temp.

Now this morning about 24 hours later my VR started right up and in about 1 minute I could put the choke off.

So what would make the difference between 1 day sitting and 5 days sitting? I'm in the Seattle area and even tho we are almost in May, It hailed in Buckley yesterday, so it was quite cold last night around 37 degrees.

Just wondering being that I'm trying to get a feel as to how often I should start the VR up being that I'm not a daily rider or even a weekly rider being that I work 26 days on and 2 days off.

At this time I'll probably at least start the VR up once a week. I'm not trying to be too pickey but I thought that 5 days without running it should start right up.

I am wondering if your battery is discharging a bit and you might not be getting as hot a spark on start as you are when you ride daily, maybe try a battery tender to see if it cures the issue. My 85 is always rough until it warms up, whether it sits or not, but I never have a hard starting issue.

Some of it is just learning the beast.

If I ever close the choke all the way on mine there is no way it will start, just flood.

Unless the temp is below freezing it only takes about 50% of choke to start it, then I adjust the choke position to get a 1500-2000 idle. I let it warm up like that while I put on my riding gear. As soon as I am geared up, I adjust the choke to about a 1000 idle and take off gently. By the time I get to the end of the block I can pull the choke all of the way off. Just be careful with corners till it is warmed up, if it sputters in a corner it could drop you.

If it is below freezing I usually have to keep the choke at the 1500-2000 setting till I get to the end of the block. then back of to a slightly hi idle for a couple more blocks.

There should be no difference in sitting 1 day, 5 days or a month. It should start the same.

Mine just sat for 5 months and started right up just like normal.

I would try giving it a good dose of SeaFoam, maybe something is the carbs is just a little sticky and the gum hardens after a couple of days.

I had another thought when I noticed where you live and wonder if youre getting moisture inside your tci or other wiring connections when it sits for a few days...

I do not start my 85 unless I intend to us it, or for some other stupid reason, like showing it off. If I do start it, I want it to warm right up, I want everyting HOT, and that takes more than the temp gauge going up. Mine sat all winter, no battery tender, nothing in the gas. Come time to fire it, I waited for the bowls to fill, gave it 50% choke, cranked it about 5 times and she was running. Sometimes the less we worry and stew the better we're off.

If it sits for awhile it could be that it just needs to have the gas pumped up. If mine sits for any length of time I turn the key on and listen for the pump to stop then turn it off and back on again and listen for the pump again. I do this till it stops pumping. Once I'm sure the gas is pumped and the bowls are full it starts right away. My engine was out all winter and upside down on the bench. After a lot of expended energy we got it back together and once secure (not exhaust yet) did what I just said and it started right up.
