Help !!! how do I .......

...... remove the bearing races from the front head ? I have the fork assembly out and will have my buddy the machinist remove the lower bearing but I need ideas on how to remove the races.

You can heat the heads up slightly then take a punch and knock them out. Of course you'll have to work upside down on the top one. If they're really tight, then you'll need to cut them out.

I used a Dremel to cut through the race, then a cold chisel to split it,,, that's for the lower. The upper was done with a long punch and a heavy hammer with the tree supported with a 2x4 from the bottom. The heavy hammer is not for swinging hard, but does give a solid blow.

Yup, all of the above. I got lucky on one and drove it out with a drift pin, but the other I ended up making 2 cuts to take out a small section then it finally gave it up with some more hammering...

Ok, first thanks Rocket, you take a 1-1/8 inch 1/2 inch drive socket on an extention but backwards so the extension is inside the socket. Use a socket and extension you do not mind banging up some. I used a 3 lb steel mallet a few good wacks from the bottom up and the race flew across the room.

 

That was the easy one.......

 

The lower race does not come out easily, I tried everything I had that I could come accross in the house, shop, yard......

 

The lower race has two slots in the frame head you need to get something into to knock it out. After bending, breaking and damaging almost everything in the shop I went to Canadian Tire and bought a cheapo set of pry bars they had. The bars are various lengths but I used one that was about 2 foot long and it has a 45 degree bend forward about 2 inches long at the point. A few wacks with that.... nothing...

 

I for some reason picked up a spray can of Liquid Wrench Super anti Sieze and gave the lower race a good spray.... went upstairs grabbed a coffee .... came back with my pry bar and mallet..... 3 wacks and the race flew across the floor and bounced off the garage door.

I just came back from picking up my new set of "All Balls" ( part # 05-761 if you care) comes with new bearrings, races, dust seals.

 

I have the lower bearing in the oven warming and the races are in the freezer chilling.

After I have my dinner I am going down to put my baby back together.... she sure looks sad all stripped apart down there.

Hmmmm, I know the freezing works but I had no problem installing the new ones with just a tap tap tap...
