muaymendez1 Posted April 21, 2011 #1 Posted April 21, 2011 Hey guys i ve read all the search forums and nothing shows for raising the bike. Mine uis the 96 rs . the rear monoshock is horizontal so the leveling links wont work. my prob is that when I get to do some good turns I scrape on my floorboard as well as my year bottom pipe and braket. I am a heavy guys and have been through the shock settings. this is the one setting which feels best. Large holes are a bit rough at high speeds but 60 mph back road cruising is very comfortable. Now before i get people telling me not to treat it like a sport bike! My turns are far from saggressive. or who knows maybe they are . But my buddy with a 96 electra glide takes the same turns with no scrape. Same speed also. What can i do?
BuddyRich Posted April 21, 2011 #2 Posted April 21, 2011 Don't know if you can raise it that much or not. If you scraping the mufflers too your about 1 degree of angle from losing control cause the rear wheel came off the ground. I don't really know if they make a kit to raise it . Did you check Baron's ?
muaymendez1 Posted April 21, 2011 Author #3 Posted April 21, 2011 At one point I felt uneasy . As if the bike was losing traction. Ill have to post a pic. The bottom of the pipe is slightly bent up. ill check barons to see what they make. Could it be that at 368 lbs Im almost the 2 up limit for the bike and therefore should wathc my lean angle. I think ill also check progressive. thanks.
Squeeze Posted April 21, 2011 #4 Posted April 21, 2011 If i remember correctly, Lynn, aka Pegscraper here had the same Problem. He raised the rear of the Bike with flipping over a triangular shaped part on the Shock. I don't remember if it took more Mods to the Part or it was only a Matter of Bolt-Off/Bolt-On, but anyway, thats hould give at least a Hint in the right Direction. You also might think about revamping the front Brake System with R1 Calipers and a Brake Master Cylinder coming off another Star MC.
SilvrT Posted April 21, 2011 #5 Posted April 21, 2011 But my buddy with a 96 electra glide takes the same turns with no scrape. Same speed also. Could it be that at 368 lbs Im almost the 2 up limit for the bike and therefore should wathc my lean angle. Just curious... does your buddy weigh the same? What about a different sized rear tire? (just throwing it out there as I have nothing else to suggest)
Tom Posted April 21, 2011 #6 Posted April 21, 2011 Just a thought. Has it ever been lowered that you know of?
muaymendez1 Posted April 21, 2011 Author #7 Posted April 21, 2011 I thought that myself but my google search to look at all possible lowering kits dont look similar to anything on the bike I am the 3rd owner so I dont know off hand. And before getting my new rear tire mounted I looked at different tires. the size it calls for is 150-90-15 the height is 90% of the width so to get a taller tire I would also need to go wider and I didnt want to run into any problems. i am gonna post another question to see if anyone with my sme year bike can take a pic of thier monshock and mounts.
straycatt Posted April 21, 2011 #8 Posted April 21, 2011 Is it possible that your cornering technique needs a little work? I don't mean to question your riding prowess, but could you be pushing the bike over too far instead of leaning your body into the corner thereby allowing the bike to stay a little more upright. That is a very common rider error.
muaymendez1 Posted April 22, 2011 Author #9 Posted April 22, 2011 I didnt even think of that. There was a point whne I had a gold wing i would notice my buddy push the bike over like a dirt bike. i will ask my buddies next time im out riding with them. Id like to hear others chime in on this idea. can it be possible that Im pushing the bike away from my lean . I think its a grat possibility in slow 90 degree corners and i may still fear the bike and thus not leaning in to the turn well. WHen i get over this cold I will try to find out if this is happening. ever since I witnessed my buddy lose his life while following me around a turn , i have a slight fear embedded in my mind.
muaymendez1 Posted April 22, 2011 Author #10 Posted April 22, 2011 Heres a video i found and dont you know if he talks about counter weight steering being wrong for hig speeds because it will drop the bike lower than you want. So if this is the deal then the reply would be that i suck and need to learn my ride!!!
muaymendez1 Posted April 22, 2011 Author #11 Posted April 22, 2011 (edited) Ok guys so looking at pegscrapers post . I found out he had a similar problem , but it didnt hit me till I looked at his pictures that this shock setup is reversed. The shock does not compress when under load it extends. All this time I have had the shock at the lowest softest setting , thinking it was the stiffest highest setting. So i will be doing his mod which is merely turning to suspension components around allowing extra clearance and Im gonna pump the preload up. I always rode my goldwings on high suspension settings with no problems. Although I have to asay that an attest to yamahas rear monoshock, I am 372lbs and I never bottom out even ono the sofftest setting. the red circle is the preload adjuster. When you look at it from under the bike you think it works like any other shock. http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh221/muaymendez/Image.gif MOst other shock work in the opposite direction than this one. flb_78 Posted April 22, 2011 #12 Posted April 22, 2011 I think the mufflers make great kickstands. The only times I'm really worried are when the floorboard mounts drag the ground and pick the front tire up.
muaymendez1 Posted April 22, 2011 Author #13 Posted April 22, 2011 Ive seen these pictures and you sure are a nut. But my problem is that i have 4 pipes one lower than the other . Compared to my buddy's 99 venture. The pipe does sit a bit lower. Its the hard steel pipe mount that scares me. the rear wheel felt like it was comming of at a certain turn. i have a crappy quality 40 min vide Id like to post so you can see the bike just pivot on the metal while you hear it scrape. I hope to someday remove chrome from my mufflers as well. thanks for the inspiration:pushups:
muaymendez1 Posted April 22, 2011 Author #14 Posted April 22, 2011 On your picture it looks like your pipe is in line with your wheel axel. When i removed my wheel to get the tire mounted. I had to remove the top pipe. the lower pipe is below the axle . http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh221/muaymendez/4-21-2011038.jpg
muaymendez1 Posted April 30, 2011 Author #15 Posted April 30, 2011 I raised th erear by an inch by flipping the shock links as per pegscrapers ideas and all is well. i am able to turn better than before with no scrapping. I did scrape once and it was all floorboard. Im a happy camper.
