Key Blanks

Do we have any locksmiths here? It seems as though I remember a while back that we had a member or two who could cut us some keys. I ran all over the place looking for someone who could make a couple duplicate keys for my Maxim and the kids scooter locally. Not even any of the steelerships could cut a cycle key. I have the keys in hand and I'm assuming they can be made if the locksmith has the number stamped on them? Even if I can just get the blanks would be nice. Then I could take them to the local hardware store to have them cut.

I had no problem getting key for my 83VR made at a local locksmith. If it helps you the blank they used:

 

X118 ilco YH49

Yup, that's the same blank for my 84VR. But the 86 Maxim key is the mirror image of it.

Most dealerships don't cut keys but they should be able to order you one from Yamaha as long as you have the key with it's number on it. Yamaha doesn't go by you're vin number just the key number. Most of the keys should cost between 16.99 - $21. Most of the keys we've order were 16.99. Even if you don't have the key it should be on the paper work you got with you're bike (as long as you bought it from the dealer). It should also be on the paper work at the dealer you buy it from. That is as long as they made copies of the stuff.

I've done business with Key Men a couple times and been happy with the results.

 

In both instances they were able to make me keys from the key code.

LOL... Seeing as how I was only 13 when my bike was made, I don't have any of the paperwork from the dealer.

 

But I did manage to find two blanks for $8.49 on ebay from p-motorsports. I'll just have to take them to the local hardware store to have them cut. It will still be cheaper than going anywhere else for them.

I have cut my own keys, but I'm lucky enought to have a key cutter here to use as long as I bring in my own keys

Well I got my key blanks and took them to the local hardware store to have them cut. I gave them a try when I got home and neither of them work. One will turn the ignition if I wiggle it just right, but not at all if I flip it over. Same key works fine in the gas trap, but then not if I flip it over. Now I'm gonna have to go talk to them tomorrow and see if they will be willing to get me some new blanks and cut them again for me. And maybe if I'm lucky, they'll work this time. Either that or give them the bill for having to go into Eau Claire to Tru-Lock and having them done. Their not cheap! Which is why I ordered my blanks on-line in the first place.

I have not had any luck with hardware stores cutting keys for anything other than home doors. Go to a locksmith to have them cut. Their equipment is generally newer/better maintained/sharper/etc. They have to keep them that way since it is their livelyhood.

 

Have had a couple of motorcycle keys made from 2 different hardware stores (one of which I use regularly and we know each other by first name) and none of them worked. Went to the local locksmith and have never had a key not work.

 

First step when a new bike comes into the herd is to get a couple of new keys made by a locksmith. Mine usually has the blanks too.

I just had a new key copy made at ACE Hardware for my 07 RSTD and it worked fine. They had the blanks in stock (found that out from another thread on this forum).
