kenw Posted November 25, 2007 #1 Posted November 25, 2007 I'm thinking about getting a gps for Christmas. Don't have a lot of change and was looking in the paper and see the TOM TOM ONE pretty reasonably priced. Has anybody used them? Are they any good? Your thoughts please! Thanks, Kenw:322:
Eck Posted November 25, 2007 #2 Posted November 25, 2007 check this site out.. you can compare GPS units to one another... http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-3490_7-0.html
Pilot Posted November 25, 2007 #3 Posted November 25, 2007 I have a friend who had a Tom Tom One XL and he didn't like it very much for a bike. He bought a Zumu 550 about a month ago after he took a good look at mine. Lots of choices out there just look for one that is waterproof and you can see in the sun. I had both the Lowrance 250C & 350C and had visability problems with both and they are not waterproof so I had to stop and remove it when it rained. The Zumo is a good unit and you can get one for around $550.00 delivered, not the $1000.00 shown on some sites. Good luck with your choice and Merry Christmas.
Gray Ghost Posted November 25, 2007 #4 Posted November 25, 2007 I would imagine that any unit that uses a replaceable memory card will not be waterproof. I did another check on the IWay 500C, the site says it is waterproof and conforms to IPX 7 standards (IPX-7 - water-proof, immersion resistant for 30 minutes under 1 meter (3 feet) of water.) I do know that I have been in some heavy downpours with my 500C without a problem.
CrazyHorse Posted November 25, 2007 #5 Posted November 25, 2007 I've ridden with my zumo550 in heavy rain for hours no problems but try finding stuff in Canada I was led astray many times seems the updates for businesses arnt that up to date. For the most part I like theunit.
Midicat Posted November 25, 2007 #6 Posted November 25, 2007 I really like my Garmin Quest 2. It holds N. America maps and is easily read in the sun. It's small enough to remove from my Ram Mount and slip into my pocket when I go in for a bite to eat. Also waterproof. One of the best accessories I ever purchased for my Venture. There are a few on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.ca/GARMIN-Quest-2-GPS-STREET-QUEST2-NAVIGATION-WaterProof_W0QQitemZ180183766670QQihZ008QQcategoryZ116219QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Midicat
FROG MAN Posted November 25, 2007 #7 Posted November 25, 2007 The tom tom one is a good unit for the price. Ours got wet in a downpour in florida it powered it self down. We use a sunshade for better visibility in direct sunlight. After it dried out in the motel it powered back up and works fine. I don't think light rain would be a problem and depending where you mount it. The windshield helps deflect the water. Our XM radio receiver is not water proof either. Our gps stays in the pickup and we only use it on the bike a couple trips a year.I don't ride in the rain if I can help it.
dray Posted November 25, 2007 #8 Posted November 25, 2007 I use a Magellan hand held i have had for years now it works great its water proof and i can change SD cards with more memory I have used it in the boat car and on the bike the best part for me is the fact i can pop it off the bike and stick it in my pocket to use for what ever i want like GEOCaching which is something my grand kids just love to do the only down fall to magellan is you need to upgrade your maping software is cheap on the map thats built in but garmin makes a few nice ones with much better standard maping software also if you did go with a Magellan i do have the maps i would be more then happy to make you up a card or two for the upgrade free Dray
Gray Ghost Posted November 26, 2007 #9 Posted November 26, 2007 I have used GPS systems for a long time now. I used to be able to get by with the smaller units that you can slip in a pocket also. But if you are getting up close to the age where you will need reading glasses, start looking for a larger screen. I can glance at my IWay 500 and get the info I need at a glance. When I look at my Garmin Etrex Legend though, it takes me a bit to find the glasses, get it close up and squint real hard to get the info. And of course my wife's screaming about watching the road always distracts me and I have to start all over again.
