Attention Canadian citizens traveling to the United States by land or water

As of January 31, 2008, if you travel to the U.S. by land or water, a U.S. law will require you to present:

• a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's licence;
   
  AND
  
• a birth certificate or a citizenship card;
   
  OR
  
• For youth under 16, a birth certificate;
   
  OR
  
• A valid passport.

Canadian citizens flying to or through the U.S. must present a valid Canadian passport.

Canadians will also be able to enter the United States by land or water with a NEXUS or Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card.

The Government of Canada will keep Canadians informed as the U.S. makes further changes to its entry requirements.

As I currently understand it, the rules dreamed up by the Feds, should apply to citizens of both countries crossing the border. Including the proposed high tech drvers licence, with the passport info imbedded in them.

Frankly, why a driver's license and birth certificate is NOT sufficient identification between Canada and the USA escapes me. Why, when every piece of ID I have says without a shadow of a doubt that I am Canadian and I live in Canada, why should I be further doubted and forced to have yet another piece of ID to enter the USA.

i personally think, that border crossings, between the u s , and canada, should remain open!

if a terrorist wants to come into either country, a passport is NOT going to be high on their list of "things to procure"!!!!!

now , the mexican border, is a whole different scenario!

Just got back from Canada. I forgot how much alike the two countries are except maybe Quebec haven't been there. Gotta say I really like Canada havent been there in about 15 years. Except for taxes boy I don't know how you Canadians do it. Everything costs a bundle. I got tired of eating out dropping a boat load of cash to feed a family of 4. Alcohol, gas, etc. Our dollar is now worth less then yours. I like the country but man it expensive. Crossing into Canada not a problem didnt even show an ID. Couple questions and was gone. Coming back to US few more questions my drivers license, my wifes DL and kids birth certificates that was it. Not to bad. But like whoever said New Years I guess US will need passports and ID. I dont really have a problem with that.

I can make you a drivers license and birth certificates on this computer. We have tens of thousands of illegals here with fake documents this is an attempt to verify that your documents are legitimate. I have no problem with canadians or mexicans or any others coming into the u.s but I do expect our government to do the best job they can to keep terrorists and criminals out and make sure visitors leave. I don't believe a passport is too much to ask most other country's require it .

I'm with you Redneck. The only thing I would like to see is a 10 year passport for us like you have. Particularly for adults past a certain age. We dont change that much.

 

Its hard to have a friendly border....criminals cross from both sides at will.

I have travelled to Germany (even East Germany years ago), France, Belgium, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Netherlands, England, Ireland, Kuwait, and Iraq without showing a passport. Heck going into that last one they even made sure I had a weapon AND ammo on the plane.

Between the IRS, the INS, the NSA, the FBI and all those other alphabet organizations, there is already too much invasion of privacy, and now the IIHS in conjunction with NHTSA are trying to ban sport bikes (see December 2007 American Motorcyclist) and to implement a mandatory helmet law. While I don't ride without a helmet, I don't want to be told I have to wear one. This country is heading more and more to an authoritarian state with the government telling us what we can and can't do, what we should and shouldh't want, etc ad infinitum. At this rate, organizations like Venture Rider will be outlawed in the future. We have to say no at some point and the more we give away to governmental control, the harder it will be if we wait much longer. And, yes this does include HILLARYCARE!!!

...and passports can't be fake??? if a D/L or a birth cert can be made up on a computer, what's to say a passport can't?

 

Now, I'm not totally up on this subject so someone enlighten me please... Once it becomes mandatory for Canadians to have a passport to enter the US, will it also be mandatory for US residents to have a passport to enter Canada?
