etcswjoe Posted April 23, 2011 Share #27 Posted April 23, 2011 As you might have guessed by my questions, I am not what you would call handy with tools, so I still have questions about installing this myself. What are "fender washers" and what is a "dished" fender washer? And how hard is it to measure the holes that have to be drilled - I would hate to mess that up? Also, I saw a trunk rack at JC Whitney that fits my price range and was wondering if anyone has that one on their bike? Thanks for your patience! The PO of my bike put the JC Whitney one on and I need to reinforce the underside since there is a hairline crack on one of the holes, it looks ok but I do like the looks of the OEM better. My Yamaha one on my other bike is better structurally, however the chrome seems to wear down real easy.
HGWT Posted April 24, 2011 Share #28 Posted April 24, 2011 I put the JC Whitney rack on back in 2000. Bad move. I got it installed everything was great. The next morning the trunk lid was cracked in 8 different directions. I had to get a new trunk lid. If I remember is was several $100 dollar bills that I paid for it. (4 of them if I remember correctly). I didn't put on another rack for 6 years. Then I bought the Yammy rack and installed it. The pucker factor was high. I had installed many racks on GW's with never a problem, but this one got me. I never figured out what happened wrong. I have been to Alaska and the roads getting there and around there are better than any good road in Oklahoma, and there is only 1 good road in Oklahoma, its just nobody can tell you where it is.
