I just took down a pool in my back yard and I now have a huge empty space. After much thought we decided to extend out current wood deck and add a hot tub. Soooooo, since im much older and more feeble than when I was in my youth, I was wondering......

Does anyone want to have a good old fashioned deck raising party/meet and eat here?? Or am I just beating a dead horse?? The ground area will be prepped and batter boards up before this project gets underway. It's not a fancy deck, just a ground level 14X22 deck, built off of the old deck. Got some white gravel that also needs to be moved around the yard too.

Im looking to do this sometime in January.

Food will be plentiful.........beverages too...... Any takers??:whistling::bighug:

Wow, and I thought I would have received a few death threats...LOL:rotf:

Im thinking the weekend of MLK holiday, which I think is the 12th-14th. Ill have a 3 day weekend then. I plan on having all the wood delivered by Jan 1st and all the batter boards and level lines up before we start. I may even have the corner posts in too. Just let me know which weekend is good for you all.........And yes, the grill will be fired up and waiting too......Ahem, I do make a mean Mississippi Mud cake too....

:( It seems that the old deck aint as rot free as I had thought. As I dug around it to get some measurements I noticed that the areas underground were rotted and/or very soft. Some of the surface decking was also soft, so........I plan on removing the old deck completely, which will be done before everyone arrives. I also revised the plans to make the new deck 22'x24'. Still a ground level deck, only longer now. Ill understand if this becomes a little more than what was planned for and you need to back out.

What type of inspections are needed in your area? A 22x24 deck is doable in 2 days if we don't need to wait on inspections. Will the footings be in before the weekend in question. Are you doing a post and beam deck? If not then what type of spans are you doing. If you have a good set of plans then A deck can be done in a couple of days.

I'd love to join you, but the timing won't work. I am going in tomorrow to have an a steel plate removed from my leg that has been in there since the 70s; that will probably keep me off the bike for a month. Then I have a trip to the Caribbean scheduled for mid January. If you do it some time later, maybe I can help. :080402gudl_prv:

David, no inspections are needed here unless its a raised deck. I dont plan on footings other than sinking 4x4 posts 2' deep and attaching the boards to them. I will have the old deck removed and the area prepped. I plan on using 14' and 10' 2x6's for the decking, 2' on centers. Hangers for the joists and im cutting up the old wood from the old deck for blocking. I should have a plan made up soon but its pretty straightforward. I built the original deck with one other person helping me 14 years ago and it was extremly sturdy. I plan on doing the new one the same way. Basically we just squared the perimeter, leveled it with the 4x4 posts then filled in the joists and additional posts where needed.

Its killing me that there was more damage to the old deck then I had anticipated and its also going to double the cost for me. Me and Jean already started tearing down the old deck. I realize that this has gotton bigger than planned but even if we can bang out just the framing and joists I can always lay the decking by myself later on. I figure we can do what we can do in one day and I can finish the rest another time.

Er, Goose.....wanna swap those carribean tickets with me??? LOL

As I was dismantling my old deck and saw just how much rot there really was under there I said to myself..."self, do you really want to do this again"? A neighbor started a company last year which installs pavers so I am waiting on an estimate from him. If the price is reasonable I might just go ahead and have him do it. If its too cost prohibitive, then ill go ahead with the deck as planned. Ill keep you all informed real soon, well in advance of the date to minimize any disruption in your schedules.

One of my main concerns was the lime rock paths I have in my yard. My wife wants to get rid of it and go back to grass and the paver dude uses lime rock as a base, so all he has to do is to drag it off the pathways and into the area to be pavered (is that a word?), killing two birds with one stone (paver?). LOL :rotf::mo money::mo money::mo money:

We have finally decided to go with concrete pavers over installing a wood deck again. Since this is going to be our retirement home too we wanted something that will outlast us. I mean, can you really see a bunch of old VentureRiders coming out again in another 15 years to replace the new deck?? Every one of them on trikes and having handicapped placards on the windshield?? :rotf::rotf:We are having the pavers professionally installed which includes a 5 year warranty.

Now, on to the mushy stuff:

To those who volunteered their time and energy to come down to Florida from out of state as well as the Florida members who also volunteered to help, I am truly touched by the gesture. You all know who you are. And im sure we would have had a great time putting up the deck. AND drinking beer...and eating food.....etc....Just the thought that you all would help with this project means so much to me.

Sooooo, once this is all finished and the hot tub and sod is installed, I plan on having a Meet & Eat here at the house this spring.
