Hey I just bought a 07 venture with 3200 miles and and have some popping, I carried it to a dealer and they want about $ 890.00 to clean the carbs/ replace "bowl" seals "needle jets" in short $ 500.00 in labor and $ 400.00 in parts.....:confused24:

The first thing to do is run a couple tanks of gas thru it with a can of seafoam in each tank. Then sync the carbs. The sea foam will clean out many carbs, the back fire may just be carbs needing tuning. Many members here have their own sync tool. They cost under $100, are easy to use, and it takes about 30 minutes.

find a member nearby with the tool to show you how to do it. He'll probably work for icecream.

And that is why we call them Stealerships ya know. Don't seem right does it? Like Randy said, dose it with Sea Foam and run it for a bit to let it get into the carbs. Then let it sit overnight and soak. Then take it out and run it like it's a rental.

If it's an '07 and only 3200 miles......it ain't been ridden much at all. Carbs and lines are gummed up. Sea Foam it the best product to take care of that. If ya dose it heavy keep in mind a fresh set of plugs will be in order after it clears up.

Get that done and do the carb sync and it should in in good shape.

Then enjoy the bike.

I have done the seafoam, and it got better and a member has offered to help me sync. the carbs... so I guess I'll take a ride.. $ 900.00 is outside my budget !!!

Are you getting ripped off? Absofrigginlutely!

You are not to far away - ride that thing down here and we'll get it taken care of for a mere fraction of that cost. Give me a call if you want to talk about it.

I don't see how you could possibly get $400 into seals and jets.....even if you replaced every single jet in all four carbs.

PartShark.com

carb bowl O ring retail $7.22 your price $5.02

needle jet set--------$12.52---------- $11.30

needle valve set----- $15.95---------- $14.09

main jet------------- $4.90----------- $4.42

pilot jet------------- $3.99----------- $3.60

diaphragm assy------ $31.86---------- $21.66

throttle valve-------- $45.29---------- $30.42

You could feasibly have quite a few $$ in parts if you replaced everything in the carbs, but just needles and bowl gaskets........

But the real kicker is that there is a 99.0062579% chance that he needs absolutely NONE of those parts! He MAY need a couple of rubber caps for about $2.00, and he almost certainly needs his jets cleaned and a good sync, but that is it.

:sign yeah that:

I spent a lil over $300.00 on parts alone to rebuild the carbs on my bike......but it's an '84. That was all new floats, diaphragms, needles, seals and valves. With an '07....not even close to needing that kind of work.

With little trust of dealer shops I'd bet the carbs wouldn't even get taken off the bike. :whistling:

I bought an 07 midnight with only 482 miles on her in Jan of 2010

I can almost 100% asssure you there is nothing expensive wrong with your bike . These bikes are rock solid but this gas with ethanol and lettin them sit for long periods of time isn't good for any motor. Try to make it to a MD and you'll be good to go.

If, by chance, your handy with your hands, mechanically inclined as it were, there are plenty of articules under 2nd gen tech section that you will find interesting. Just do a search on carbs when your in that section...

Maintenance Day's are what we all call it when we get together to work on the bikes, visit, usually eat...then eat...and then eat. They are held at random times across the country.

The original one here, and what many simply refer to as MD or Maintenance Day is the one that I hold annually. It is held at my house in Oberlin, OH and I think last year there were about 250 VenureRider's present. The date this year is June 4th.

Here is a link to it in the Regional Rally area. Now don't think that you are too far away, people come from as far away as Texas, Florida, various parts of Canada...all over.

Gogosa, If your mechanically inclined:

Buy:

two cans carb cleaner(buy new) you don't want to use some of the older carb cleaners as some can actually destroy the orings in your carbs.

This is a way to clean carbs and ensure jets are clear without taking carbs off...

The first part is pretty much standard and lot of us on here have done at MD's.

Take seat, tank and top center air box off.

Drain carbs, open 4 drains on bottom of float bowl with a long phillips head screwdriver then close.

If you take fuel line off at center rear of carbs and spray full of cleaner, this will effectively place cleaner in all your carbs.

let sit 30 min.

drain carbs, open drain screws. normally at this point you would close the drain screws and your done but in this case since everythings accessable now (leave open)

---part I would like to add---

Take diaphram(s) and carb slides out. (4) screws round black covers on sides of carbs. Clean and lightly spray with silicone. Make sure you don't loose that tiny oring at bottom of diaphram cover.

Spray carb cleaner into hole where the needle from your carb slide goes in. It should be your high speed jet?

Spray carb cleaner into small hole inside top of carb. It should be your pilot jet?

Spray carb cleaner into hole at the "T" sections of your carbs will be your overflows.

hit each with about 60 PSI compressed air(do not exceed)

Close your drain screws.

Reinstall top center air box, tank and seat.

This is probably a 3-4 hour job. Maybe less if your more experienced.

Take the man's offer!! Goose is very knowledgeable and hard working and eager to help out!

Of course another seafoam treatment followed by some new plugs will probably help out too! These are TOURING bikes and meant to be driven long distances...
