For those that have had both RSV and GW,, I find the one complaint I have on the RSV is the intercom.. It seems to have a faint hiss all the time, and it very hard to hear or use at freeway speeds. Under 55mph it is only ok..

 

Is the GW intercom any better?

Is it possible that the hiss is coming from the mic or the mic bar? I know mine seems to ... like it's picking up the wind.

You can set the volume on the intercom, if you adjust it to wear your comfortable will help with a lot of back ground noise.

Thanks for the responses, but the this in not mic noise as I have inline controls on both my mic and headset.. Turning the mic down does nothing, so I turn the headset down after a while on long trips when it starts to bother me. Of course then I can't hear the passenger at all.

 

As far a volume, if I set it where the hiss doesn't bother me it is too low to hear the passenger at all. Even if I adjust it to where is is loud enough to hear the passenger, at freeway speeds it is not clean enough to under stand the passenger over the bikes wind noise.

 

I actually have very good hearing, and most people cannot even hear the hiss I hear. And what really bothers me about it is Yamaha produces high quality stereo equipment, why not for the bikes?

 

But back to the original question, is the GW intercom any better than the RSV? I have talked to HD Ultra riders that us the same headsets and they say they have no problems, not sure if the HD intercom is better or not, but not sure I want an Ultra anyway, and certainly cannot afford one now. Basically I'm trying to decide if I decide to get a new bike, do any of them have better intercoms. Because it has got to the point we rarely bother to use our head set cables.

I've had both the Venture (09) and a Wing (10). Wife and I have the J&M headsets in Nolen N43's. From OUR experience, the intercom on the Wing is superior to the one on the Venture. We've got less wind noise/background noise and can talk in normal tones and clearly hear all that is said at any speed we've traveled, including a lot of interstate miles at speed. I truly don't know what causes the differences, I just know that in our case the Wing system works better. YRMV....

Thanks,, Not sure if I will really get a different bike, but if I do a clearer intercom would be nice, and ABS a must.. I've always like the looks of the Wing, but I love the looks of the new BMW GTL, but being new it is out of my current price range..

Both systems seem to be about equal to me. I think we get a bit more wind noise on the wing, along with more wind everywhere.

To be quite honest with you, it sounds to me like you have something wrong with your wires, headset or intercom system. I have had similar issues with mine - here is a quick summary.

 

Excess noise in the headsets was solved by: 1) ensuring that the mic and windsock for mic were appropriately oriented, installed and very close (touching) my mouth when trying to communicate 2) re-arranging and shielding the audio wires that run under the gas tank to avoid the ignition coil wires (ie the E&M interference)

 

Issue with very low sound/volume was solved by replacing the patch cables. I determined they were bad and J&M replaced them under warranty. My first set of replacements were incredible. I couldn't believe how well I could hear the passenger. Additionally the quality of the music was MUCH better through the headsets too (although I very rarely do that anyways).

 

My IC is set anywhere from 8 to 14 depending on how good the particular passenger is at keeping the mic positioned appropriately. at 13 and above I do notice a bit more excess noise (I believe it to be almost exclusively wind noise, with a hint of other bike related noises mixed in) but if I run with it at 12 or below the noise through the headset is no worse than the ambient noise that would other wise be there (with the audio system off).

 

For what it is worth, I have the 'el chepo'/entry level J&M HS-8154B-OF in both of my open face helmets.

 

If we were closer I'd say lets switch bikes and give-er a try to see if it is YOUR audio system or your headsets; maybe you can do that with someone nearby you.

It isn't the wind noise through the mic, as I have an in line control and can shut the mic completely off and the noise is still there. It is not the ignition noise, as I have had that too and corrected it. This is just a high frequency hiss that is there even when the engine is not running.

 

did have one bad cable from J&M that would cut in and out, but have already replaced that. I starting to believe that it is there in all the intercoms and very few people can hear high enough frequencies to notice it.
