Ok I had been told that if a dealership had repaired second gear problems on an 83 to 85 that they put a center punch mark on the frame by the sticker under the rear brake pedal. Well mine has that punch mark. I called a friend at a yamaha dealership and he did some research and found that yamaha had indeed instructed there dealers to mark the frame in this manner. I will try to get a picture up. Mine is on the top portion of the sticker and the sticker is peeling somewhat away from the punch mark now. Shaun

And here I thought it was a punch mark on the engine case next to the serial number...

Mine has the punch marks in both places. Yamaha dealer told me they punched both spots.

Not a good pic but about the best I can get.

I did also find another number that had been stamped in ,not from the factory. Does anyone know if it means anything to have the numbers 4E84 hand stamped in? Shaun

I may very well be wrong but I think that the other punch mark, the one that you might find near the serial number on the engine case, designated that the stator oil cooling modification had been done.

Mine has both those punches AND a dead second gear.

It depends if the dealer actually fixed it correctly or simply replaced the washer with another one that would wear just lie the first one.

I would not assume that 2nd gear is good to go on a early 1st gen just because it has those punches.

Weird. I had the cooling kit in mine but no punch on the case.

What I had heard on the cooling kit was that the rotor crank bolt had the small hole in the end of it (about .025" dia.) where the unmodified ones didn't. This of course, meant pulling the stator cover.

This is the first I had heard about a punch mark for the cooling fix.
