Goat Roper Posted March 17, 2011 #1 Posted March 17, 2011 Friend took his new to him RSV in to get an oil leak checked out and was told that the shifter shaft had play in it and oil was leaking from the "wallowed" out area of the crankcase around the shifter shaft. I have never heard of this nor can I find any info on such a thing happening. Shop says it will be $6000 to fix because you have to replace the ENTIRE crankcase and basically rebuild it all. Assuming they are right, is there any repair for this? The bike shifts fine and is excellent otherwise.
Dano Posted March 17, 2011 #2 Posted March 17, 2011 I would be suspect of the dealer, but on the 1st gens the shaft is supported so there wouldn't be any wobble on the actual shaft itself. There are several areas around there that can leak, they're just not doing a good enuff job finding it. Whay year is the bike? They carry a 5 year full warranty that would cover this. Dan Oh, theres an oil seal where the shaft exits the block, so it can't wobble out the crankcase. GET THAT BIKE AWAY FROM THE DEALER QUICKLY!

Squeeze Posted March 18, 2011 #5 Posted March 18, 2011 I agree with the others, get the Bike out of that Dealer immediately. :255: IF the Shift Shaft Seal is leaking, you can replace it from outside of the Casing. If you want to do it right, you have to undo the Clutch Hub and pull the Shift Shaft first. This takes some Time and you'll need a Clutch Hub Holder Tool. You most likely can expect some hassle because you probably need to undo the Clutch Slave Cylinder. But other than this, no big Deal and cheap too. But it's very rare that Seal is leaking, even after YEARS in Service. I'd suspect other Area first.

Cripes, I mean heck, if the bike is old enough to be out of warranty then it probably worth about as much as they want to fix the thing. $6,000 my A**. Be better off buying a used engine with low miles on it and putting it in if that were the case. I'm calling a BS on this dealer as well!! Go somewhere else!!
