texasrices Posted August 18, 2006 #1 Posted August 18, 2006 I just replaced my old Metzler 880s and was told that I could expect approx, 8000 - 10,000 miles for a set of tires now days. The guy at the dealers jaw dropped when I told him that I had 16,000 on mine. Hence the question... how many miles do you average on a set of tires, and on what brand of tire?
V7Goose Posted August 18, 2006 #2 Posted August 18, 2006 14,000 on my last Avon Venom rear. Still rolling the Venom on the front, so cannot give you mileage on that one yet. Goose
Guest Flash Posted August 18, 2006 #3 Posted August 18, 2006 My Dunlop 404s gave me 10000miles and I thought that was not all that good but maybe it is.
spitzer77 Posted August 18, 2006 #4 Posted August 18, 2006 I got 19,500 miles from the front and 22,000 from the rear of my dunlop 491 elite 2's the rear is the MV-85 15:cool10:
venturejockey Posted August 19, 2006 #5 Posted August 19, 2006 I'm at 15,000 miles on the rear and 14000 on the front ME880's. But as can be read on on another thread I have tires ordered to replace both right now. Funny that the front wore out faster than the rear.
2Whlsrollin Posted August 19, 2006 #6 Posted August 19, 2006 I have 14,000 on my OEM 404's. Tha back has about had it. Guess I am going to order the Avons and will go with the less wide front.
mm482 Posted August 19, 2006 #7 Posted August 19, 2006 On the first set of 404, I got 14K on the rear and 21K on the front. I replaced the 404 s with me 880s. They were good for 18K on the rear and 23K on the front. I just put a new set of 404s on last week. I went with the 130/90 on the front. I bike handles much better with 130/90 on the front. I went with the 404s because I got a deal on them, $142 shipped to the door. Earl
Bat21 Posted August 22, 2006 #8 Posted August 22, 2006 Just replaced my Dunlop OEM 404 at 14,000, both front and rear on RSMV-03. Rear still had some tread but was looking a little too worn for my taste and the front could have gone another ?. Replaced them with the Michelin Commanders and have about 1,000 on them so far. Have had no major issues with them and they handle great, and have great traction. Panic stop from about 50 mph and the rear never slid as it often did with the Dunlops. Cannot say whether they handle wet yet, since we have had no rain in Texas lately. Have a 900 mile trip set up in September and that should be a good test of these new Michelins, will post some info after the trip. On my V-Star 1100 had Metzlers and I could only get aboyt 8-9000 on the rear of it. My BIL has a Harley Softail Standard and he can only average around 9,000 on his rear, with the Dunlop 404's. He's on his fourth rear tire now but looking at the Michelins as well.
Phoenix Posted September 24, 2009 #9 Posted September 24, 2009 I was disappointed in the Dunlop D404. I only got 7300 miles out of it. While I don't mind compromising mileage for wet road traction, I have to say that 7300 miles is more of a compromise than I'm willing to soak my money into again. I'm shopping around and looking at the Avon Venoms, Dunlop E3's, and the Continental Milestones. If anyone has experience with these, or the Michelin Commanders, please holler with mileage and wet road traction. Thanks, Phoenix
foxman Posted September 24, 2009 #10 Posted September 24, 2009 I'm past 12k with my Avons. Down to wear bars on rear. Front looks great!
gunboat Posted September 24, 2009 #11 Posted September 24, 2009 the front me880 got just over 22,000 miles and still could have gone a few more. but canged it to a avon cobra radial to match the new kumho c/t on the fear. the old bfg c/t was down to the wear bars with over 31,000 miles on it. don c.
OB-1 Posted September 24, 2009 #12 Posted September 24, 2009 Our last set of tires were Michelin Commanders. These were the best wearing tires so far on our bike and I’d rate the dry and wet traction as excellent. We got approximately 11,000 miles on the rear tire and 14,000 miles on the front. The previous tires were the stock Dunlop’s, which lasted about 7000 miles; then Pirelli’s, which had good wet & dry traction but poor life for us. Had a Dunlop 404 rear for just over 400 miles before it was shot. Wet & dry traction of the 404 was very good. The present set of tires are Dunlop Elite 3’s. These seem to wearing very well, but it’s early. They have excellent dry traction, but we haven’t done enough wet weather riding to really evaluate the wet weather traction.
frankd Posted September 25, 2009 #13 Posted September 25, 2009 I usually got about 20-22K miles from a set of Dunlop Touring Elite IIs--The back would be just about bald and the front would have a little bit of thread left. My last set of Avons lasted about 26K front. The back is a little newer (nail in the original one) and has about 18K and counting. This is on the 1200. My 1300 Gen 1 had a Dunlop 404 on the back, and from what the guy I bought it from said it had about 7500 miles on it. It was too worn for the long trip we had planned so I put an Avon on it. BTW, the front is a Bridgestone and has about 15K. It should make about 18-20K or another 5,000 miles. If he was surprised at 16K, he'd be shocked at how long some of us get out of tires.
Yammer Dan Posted September 25, 2009 #14 Posted September 25, 2009 Here we go again!! If I get over 5k out of whatever I put on rear I would be happy. 6 ply Kendra on there now. Looks good got about 3 on it.

Looks good got about 3 on it. You know Dan....YOu don't have to twist your right hand ALL THE WAY to the stop...Mine will run at 1/2 or even 1/4 throttle!
Yammer Dan Posted September 25, 2009 #16 Posted September 25, 2009 You know Dan....YOu don't have to twist your right hand ALL THE WAY to the stop...Mine will run at 1/2 or even 1/4 throttle! But will you stay in front of the Hardleys and the 2nd gens???
Yammer Dan Posted September 26, 2009 #17 Posted September 26, 2009 Just looked at what you ride!! Wait til I get my foot out of my mouth. Now maybe thats why the 2nd gens can't keep up. You can roll that right hand a little more sometimes. Just watch thet front wheel. It likes to get up there. Maybe thats why I get good mileage out of Front Tires??
BradT Posted September 26, 2009 #18 Posted September 26, 2009 Dunlop 404's I got 22,000 on a front tire, 12,000 and 10,000 on the rears. I could have gotten more on all of them but was going on road trip and didn't want to have an issue. Brad
Iowa Guy Posted September 26, 2009 #19 Posted September 26, 2009 I'm past 12k with my Avons. Down to wear bars on rear. Front looks great! And the front did not cup in an alternate pattern around the tire? I've had cupping on my second Avon on the front. Buying Dunlop next. Iowa Guy
