How do they measure the speakers?

I know, sounds silly. But when we say we use a 4" speaker in the first gen., is that measured diagonally from mounting hole to mounting hole? Or is that actually the diameter of the speaker? Measured diagonally, center to center, the mounting holes are 4.5" apart on the first gen.

Used to be the size of the cone. Now I think it is the mounting holes.

I bought a set at Wal-mart two years ago, they were listed as 4" on packaging and they fit right in.

 

Know this doesn't answer your question, but it was close.
