Brake Pad Posted March 7, 2011 #1 Posted March 7, 2011 My engine sounds real loud while its sitting on the stand, is there a way to make the engine run smoother?
straycatt Posted March 7, 2011 #2 Posted March 7, 2011 (edited) Define "real loud", and what type of noise. And Smoother? Is it currently miss firing, vibrating excessively? What mufflers are on the bike. Louder pipes can set up an unpleasant harmonic/vibration even at idle. Has the carb sync been checked? Plugs, wires, oil been changed recently? Valve adjustment checked? Is this sound new to the bike? Are you listening to it inside where the sound can be magnified by the walls/stuff it's bouncing off? Have an exhaust leak? Loose motor mount? Hmm, that's all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure there are more possibilities. edit. I just thought of another one. You said it was sitting "on the stand". Do you mean the side stand or up on a lift? If it is up on a lift I suppose that it's possible that you could get more noise/vibration than you would with the tires on the ground "damping" the sound/vibes. Edited March 7, 2011 by straycatt
SilvrT Posted March 7, 2011 #3 Posted March 7, 2011 If it's anything like mine and a few others I've heard, apparently it's normal. Sounds like the whole valve train is gonna blow apart. Especially the 2 rear cylinder banks... they seem to be quite a bit noisier than the front 2, and even more so when I first start the engine. I never could figgure out why the engine on this '06 was so noisy whereas in comparison, both my 1st gen's were much quieter. I even went to the dealer and asked about it when I first got it and they said... "that engine sounds normal to me..." .... Even after 2.5 years owning it, it still bothers me but I'm trying to get used to it as I keep saying to myself... "it's NORMAL.." ... and it must be coz it hasn't blown up ...yet LOL

It drives me nuts... But I guess it is 'normal'. My 82 sewing machine IS much quieter than my 01RSV Oh well... Although Rick, I do think yours was quieter than mine... It sure drove a lot nicer...

And I've listened to a few others that are noisier too. It puzzles me as to why such a "rock solid" engine, designed the way it is, has more internals noise than most any current V-twin out there today, not to mention Wings and Beemers. I've said this before ... my son's '03 1200 Sportster engine is amazingly quiet. Go figgure eh?

I believe we also included oil () in that conversation too. Beau-Kat Posted March 9, 2011 #9 Posted March 9, 2011 While on a ride a year or so back, I had Art to tell me that my Millenium's engine was quieter than his. Don't remember which year RSV he was riding then. But I had never noticed any other RSVs being "loud", so I don't know how "quiet" he was saying mine was. I ride with ear plugs, so I don't aways discern little noises coming from other bikes near me. Since I always use ear plugs, I know how mine should sound and feel when I'm on it. Anyway, my Millenium makes some noise at idle too. But, I pull in the clutch and most of it goes away. Same thing on my VMax. I think sounds are a bit pronounced from the water coursing through these engines. I had a 3.8l v6 Ford that had a little hollow clunkity sound. I coulda sworn it had bad camshaft bushings, but it was a water pump bearing. The water was carrying the sound throughout the engine. Hadn't noticed any engine or clutch noise on my '88, but that only has 18k miles on it so far. As far as the quiet Sportster comment goes, my 2003 883R (solid engine mounts) makes a little bit of racket at idle, but I always thought that it was because it was missing two cylinders... Gotta love our V-4s !
