Beau-Kat Posted February 24, 2011 #1 Posted February 24, 2011 Anyone got any ideas on this 17MM tool for fork cap removal on the 1st gens? http://www.restockit.com/sunex-1-2-drive-hex-impact-socket-17mm-(sun26499).html?source=CJproduct Price seems reasonable, and I wouldn't have to create a frankenstein tool outa parts. I am a mechanical guy who would use thing quite often for other projects too, so it wouldn't be job specific to my 1st gen. Looks worth the purchase to me, unless you guys have other suggestions. Thanks. Rusty
bkuhr Posted February 24, 2011 #2 Posted February 24, 2011 Heres what I got http://www.harborfreight.com/13-piece-high-visibility-12-drive-deep-wall-metric-impact-socket-set-67904.html Covered all the VR bases so far, including fork caps, axle nuts, etc.
Marcarl Posted February 24, 2011 #3 Posted February 24, 2011 Looks like a good deal to me,,,,, want my address???
Squeeze Posted February 24, 2011 #4 Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) There's a Multi Allen Head Tool out there, where 17mm is the smallest Size. The others are 19, 22 and 24mm. Works great and helps also with the big Wheel Axles on recent Bikes. Might be the better Option at the same Price. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31rzdz3SLVL._SL500_AA300_.jpg or on Ebay # 150546023742 Edited February 24, 2011 by Squeeze
Squidley Posted February 24, 2011 #5 Posted February 24, 2011 Rusty, I made a tool for the cap removal on the forks out of a 1/2" bolt. The head of it is right at 17mm and I put 2 jam nuts on the shank and use a socket and 1/2" ratchet to remove it. Costs like a dollar
Beau-Kat Posted February 24, 2011 Author #6 Posted February 24, 2011 Heres what I got http://www.harborfreight.com/13-piece-high-visibility-12-drive-deep-wall-metric-impact-socket-set-67904.html Covered all the VR bases so far, including fork caps, axle nuts, etc. Thanks. I'll have to check those out too. We have a Harbor Freight and Northern Tools near here.
Beau-Kat Posted February 24, 2011 Author #7 Posted February 24, 2011 I forgot about that tool! Yup, I can use that on some front axles too. I once put tires on a mid 80s Kawasaki sport bike and I made a tool out of a large allen wrench when I didn't have time to go looking for the right tool. I'll definitely pick that one up. Beau-Kat Posted February 24, 2011 Author #8 Posted February 24, 2011 I have a True Value Hardware store 1/2 mile from me. This may be the ticket, if I can't wait on the tool to arrive. I have a couple of days off right now and my bottoming out forks are on my mind. I work shift work and don't sleep a whole lot. Sometimes, I wake up at night and head out to the garage and think, "Now, if I only had that certain tool, I could could this job or that job etc." Sometimes things a very spur of the moment for me. Thanks Squidley Rusty, I made a tool for the cap removal on the forks out of a 1/2" bolt. Beau-Kat Posted February 24, 2011 Author #9 Posted February 24, 2011 Looks like a good deal to me,,,,, want my address??? If I buy two, then I'll ride up your way to hand deliver yours to you. But I will be expecting some good strong coffee when I arrive. It'll be quite a road trip from South Carolina. You never know, I was born in and do have relatives in Canton, NY (upstate above Watertown). Hey, any reason to ride, right?
Condor Posted February 24, 2011 #10 Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) Looks worth the purchase to me, unless you guys have other suggestions. Thanks. Rusty None.... Buy it. I'm thinking about picking one up too.... Wonder what they charge for shipping??? That one posted by Squeeze looks good too.... Edited February 24, 2011 by Condor
greg_in_london Posted February 24, 2011 #11 Posted February 24, 2011 This is the kit I bought: [ame=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/professional-10pc-hex-bit-socket-set-1-2-dr-ct2563-/370430315978?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item563f5e0dca]professional 10pc hex bit socket set 1/2" dr ct2563 on eBay (end time 08-Mar-11 13:20:20 GMT)[/ame] It was a little cheaper when I got it I think, but it has the important sizes. I twisted one when I leant hard on it, but for the fork plugs it is just fine.
Snaggletooth Posted February 24, 2011 #12 Posted February 24, 2011 Hey Condor, $8.95 on shipping for a total of $16.82.
Condor Posted February 25, 2011 #13 Posted February 25, 2011 (edited) Hey Condor, $8.95 on shipping for a total of $16.82. Afraid of that. Think I'll pass. This thread did produce some great suggestions. When I needed one I couldn't find anything, and no one had any suggestions outside of the 1/2" bolt trick, so I ended up buying a 17mm hex wrench from Sears and cutting 2" off the end, and welding it into an old beater socket. Looks ugly, but worked great. Wish I knew what I did with it after the fork job was done.... Edited February 25, 2011 by Condor

You know the one you threw down on the top of that box that came with the parts for the last project. Look you'll see.

Beau-Kat Posted February 27, 2011 Author #16 Posted February 27, 2011 Well, I looked in my fluids stash and I discovered I already had a brand new litre of Bel-Ray 10W fork oil. So, I got to itchin' to ride and just couldn't wait to jump on the fork job. So, looked around in my 40 year old bucket of bolts ad nuts, etc. What do ya know, I found a correct size bolt...but only one nut. So, I looked around again and remembered I had a welder. So, by the time I looked around again, I had done made me up a tool (looks like crap, but works like cherry pie). So, Progessive fork spring job done and bike test ridden. And Skydoc, if you're looking at this, I finally got to stretch out second gear for ya. WooHoo! Man, I'm a happy camper. I think I'm still gonna get that multi-sized axle tool though. I'll need it sooner or later. Thanks for all of the suggestions. This site's the greatest. Rusty
skydoc_17 Posted February 27, 2011 #17 Posted February 27, 2011 Hey Rusty, To me, 2nd gear on a well running VR is "Motorcycle SEX"! My wife Jean has thumped me more than once on the helmet when I am in the "Second Gear Zone", and basically forgot she was back there! There is something about getting smashed back in the saddle while heading for "Red Line" in Second Gear that gets the old juices flowing in this old country boy....EVERY TIME! Cudo's Rusty, for taking your bike to the next level with the upgrades you have recently done to your VR. ENJOY! Earl

Then threaded a couple jam nuts on. FYI, the fork caps do NOT need much torque. Also I cut down a 17mm allen "L" wrench as a spare. I seem to lose my tools.
