Whatcha think about this 17mm tool?

Anyone got any ideas on this 17MM tool for fork cap removal on the 1st gens?

Price seems reasonable, and I wouldn't have to create a frankenstein tool outa parts.

 

I am a mechanical guy who would use thing quite often for other projects too, so it wouldn't be job specific to my 1st gen.

 

Looks worth the purchase to me, unless you guys have other suggestions.

There's a Multi Allen Head Tool out there, where 17mm is the smallest Size. The others are 19, 22 and 24mm. Works great and helps also with the big Wheel Axles on recent Bikes. Might be the better Option at the same Price.

I made a tool for the cap removal on the forks out of a 1/2" bolt. The head of it is right at 17mm and I put 2 jam nuts on the shank and use a socket and 1/2" ratchet to remove it. Costs like a dollar

I forgot about that tool!

Yup, I can use that on some front axles too.

I once put tires on a mid 80s Kawasaki sport bike and I made a tool out of a large allen wrench when I didn't have time to go looking for the right tool.

I'll definitely pick that one up.

I have a True Value Hardware store 1/2 mile from me. This may be the ticket, if I can't wait on the tool to arrive. I have a couple of days off right now and my bottoming out forks are on my mind.

I work shift work and don't sleep a whole lot.

Sometimes, I wake up at night and head out to the garage and think, "Now, if I only had that certain tool, I could could this job or that job etc."

Sometimes things a very spur of the moment for me.

It was a little cheaper when I got it I think, but it has the important sizes. I twisted one when I leant hard on it, but for the fork plugs it is just fine.

Afraid of that. Think I'll pass. This thread did produce some great suggestions. When I needed one I couldn't find anything, and no one had any suggestions outside of the 1/2" bolt trick, so I ended up buying a 17mm hex wrench from Sears and cutting 2" off the end, and welding it into an old beater socket. Looks ugly, but worked great. Wish I knew what I did with it after the fork job was done....

Well, I looked in my fluids stash and I discovered I already had a brand new litre of Bel-Ray 10W fork oil.

So, I got to itchin' to ride and just couldn't wait to jump on the fork job.

So, looked around in my 40 year old bucket of bolts ad nuts, etc. What do ya know, I found a correct size bolt...but only one nut.

So, I looked around again and remembered I had a welder.

So, by the time I looked around again, I had done made me up a tool (looks like crap, but works like cherry pie).

So, Progessive fork spring job done and bike test ridden.

And Skydoc, if you're looking at this, I finally got to stretch out second gear for ya. WooHoo!

Man, I'm a happy camper.

I think I'm still gonna get that multi-sized axle tool though. I'll need it sooner or later.

Hey Rusty,

To me, 2nd gear on a well running VR is "Motorcycle SEX"! My wife Jean has thumped me more than once on the helmet when I am in the "Second Gear Zone", and basically forgot she was back there! There is something about getting smashed back in the saddle while heading for "Red Line" in Second Gear that gets the old juices flowing in this old country boy....EVERY TIME!

I like Squidley's way. I did the bolt with a 17mm head on it. Then threaded a couple jam nuts on. FYI, the fork caps do NOT need much torque. Also I cut down a 17mm allen "L" wrench as a spare. I seem to lose my tools.
