I installed my new starter this afternoon--she fired right up!!!---BUT!---It sounds like my starter is still trying to stay engaged--the last starter was ruined when the Starter Button became stuck while I was starting it and I didn't notice it was stuck until the damage was done----I freed the starter button and it seems to be working ok---My question is--Has anyone had this problem and do you think it would be best to replace the starter button assembly while I'm this deep into it?.......................Larry:confused07:

I found just cleaning it, if only with squirty externally, was sufficient.

 

It is worth mmaking sure that it releases though.

I am never a fan of throwing parts / cash at a problem to hope for the best.

You need to find out exactly what the problem really is. I once had an issue where the Bendix in the flywheel was causing the starter to keep turning with the engine. It was nothing electrical. Start by checking for voltage at the starter and work your way back toward the battery. If it nothing electrical, then it might be a mechanical problem.

Good advice.

 

Quick and easy test: Start up, turn key off. If it keeps cranking your starter relay is probably stuck.

 

Otherwise turn key back on. If it starts up without pushing the start button you probably have a problem in the start button or its wiring.

 

If you get through all that without anything funny fire it back up. Rev the engine - if the starter clutch is stuck that starter will scream like a turbocharger.

 

Otherwise, it's probably all in your head.

Break out your Digital Multi Meter, set it to 20V DC, place one Lead on the +Cable of the Starter and the other Lead to Ground, start the Bike and look if you still have Voltage if the Motor runs and the Starter Button is released.

 

If no, it's electrically fine. If you still hear some wierd Sound, the Starter Clutch could be stuck, not releasing it's grabbing Force and the Flywheel now runs the Reductions Gears and the Starter Motor.

 

 

If yes, place one Lead on the small Contact of the Starter Relay and the other to the positive Post of the Battery.

 

If there's Voltage, there's something wrong with the Wiring between Handle Bar Switch and Starter Relay or the Switch in the right Handle is bad/stuck.
