naturbar Posted February 21, 2011 #1 Posted February 21, 2011 just received my new front and rear Venom X tires - the rear appears to have small cracks all around it (or maybe these are just molding marks?) - the date code is 4310, so they are fairly new? i've attached a pic - for those who have had this problem would you confirm that my tire needs to go back for replacement or should i mount it? TIA......
friesman Posted February 21, 2011 #2 Posted February 21, 2011 I am no expert, but I wouldnt mount that, it would go back to seller. Brian
T.J. Posted February 21, 2011 #3 Posted February 21, 2011 I would take them back or call and let them know about the cracks. That should not be. Mine have been on my bike for about two years and I have none of that. Bummer.
E-Fishin-C Posted February 21, 2011 #4 Posted February 21, 2011 I would like to know where they store their tires... I have had 4 Venture Royales and the 2001 all had Venom X;'s and none had any sign of cracking
1 Canuck Posted February 21, 2011 #5 Posted February 21, 2011 Many here, including myself have had bad experience with Venom X tires due to cracking. The cracks accumulate real quick. Since I've had 2 that cracked within weeks of having them; I'll never use them again.
coy55boy Posted February 21, 2011 #6 Posted February 21, 2011 I've never used Venom tires, but if I received a tire of ANY BRAND looking like that, I would not install it.
skydoc_17 Posted February 21, 2011 #7 Posted February 21, 2011 I have run a few different types of tires on both of my First Gen. VR's including the Venom's. Form a handling standpoint, they were the best tire I have ever put on my bike. Unfortunately, I have had the "cracking issue" with almost EVERY Venom I mounted. For the money, I now run the Dunlop E3 on both of my VR's. Performance is comparable to the Venom and the price is much better, and there is NO issue with the tire cracking. I would NOT mount that tire! AND I would question a Vendor that would send a tire looking like that out to a customer with it being brand new. Earl
LilBeaver Posted February 21, 2011 #8 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) just received my new front and rear Venom X tires - the rear appears to have small cracks all around it (or maybe these are just molding marks?) - the date code is 4310, so they are fairly new? i've attached a pic - for those who have had this problem would you confirm that my tire needs to go back for replacement or should i mount it? TIA...... These tires are what, 15 weeks old and already look like that?!?!? Sheesh. I have gone through 2 sets (2 fronts & 2 rears) of the venoms because of THIS issue (not because of tread wear). Well, one of them there was cracking within the tread itself instead of just on the sidewall, so that was it for me. Granted they were replaced under warranty, but the last time they offered to replace them again under warranty. I said no thanks and had a set of E3s for me instead. I would most definitely have it replaced. There should be no question at all - especially if they have not been mounted yet. If you need to, contact Avon directly with pictures, the date code and a description of what you see. That is what I did and I had a relatively fast response that was basically an apology and a statement saying that it is, indeed, a warranty issue (ie no cost to me). Note that a quick search for 'Avon cracking' or 'avon sidewall' or something of the like you will find some good information on the ordeal. Also, Condor (I believe) started a thread and list that contained folks that had issues with the Avon tires, what the issue was, date code and the resolution. have fun. This is my 3rd rear venom X, had no issues with other two sets. do you still have the contact info for Avon? i'm going to contact the seller and see if they have a tire w/o cracks that they will exchange.
Snaggletooth Posted February 21, 2011 #10 Posted February 21, 2011 I have set of Venom X's on my bike now that were made in 08. I've got 18,000 miles on them and replacing them this spring due to wear. No sign of any kind of cracking on them at all. If I saw the issue you're having with a brand new tire I'd be looking to return it as soon as possible. As asked in the other post, I'd have to wonder where they had been stored and what they might have been exposed to. Not a pretty tire. Good luck Mike
flb_78 Posted February 21, 2011 #11 Posted February 21, 2011 Are those actually cracks? Can you feel them with your fingernail or could it just be "cracks" in the mold release agent?
Yammer Dan Posted February 21, 2011 #12 Posted February 21, 2011 Sure don't look good. I would be asking questions. Where did you get it?
LilBeaver Posted February 21, 2011 #13 Posted February 21, 2011 This is my 3rd rear venom X, had no issues with other two sets. do you still have the contact info for Avon? i'm going to contact the seller and see if they have a tire w/o cracks that they will exchange. http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/contact-information This is their website. All the way at the bottom there is an 800 number to call or a 'contact us' form to fill out. I suggest you go through these channels first (if you choose to contact Avon directly instead of going through whatever dealer you went through). Respecting their customer service chain of command, while may be annoying on the customer end, just seems like a considerate way to start. That being said I will look to see if I have any additional information on the rep I corresponded with (same one for all of the separate incidents I had) but would like to leave that as a last resort, if necessary at all. Are those actually cracks? Can you feel them with your fingernail or could it just be "cracks" in the mold release agent? ^^^^ Good point ^^^^ although they sure look like it in the picture - but pictures can be deceiving.
naturbar Posted February 21, 2011 Author #14 Posted February 21, 2011 Are those actually cracks? Can you feel them with your fingernail or could it just be "cracks" in the mold release agent? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- well i questioned that myself......i used my jewelers loop t look at it and it's deceptive at best....it appears that when you flex the sidewall the cracks open ?? the front tire is perfect! Sure don't look good. I would be asking questions. Where did you get it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i purchased them from South West Moto in Tuscon Az., it's the third set i bought from them. the last rear i bought had to go back due to it being wobbly.....they have really good customer service so i expect they will make this right asap. i'm beginning to believe that Avon needs to step up there quality assurance. i love the ride the tires give and the mileage is great too but this might be the last Avons on my bike, unless they step up the quality.

TIA...... Yep need to send that one back to the dealer. If you bought it online contact AVON warantee and let them take care of the shipping costs plus replace the tire. They'll probably want the thing handled by a dealer, but since they don't have to pay for the mounting and balancing they should be agreeable.
royalstar09 Posted February 22, 2011 #16 Posted February 22, 2011 Not only would I NOT mount it. They would issue an immediate pick up order after sending me out one that is not junk Someone in parts dept needs glasses.

TIA...... That looks like the white powder coating. See if it will wipe off with soap and water. This keeps the tire from sticking to the mold.

This keeps the tire from sticking to the mold. that's what i did initially - but they are cracks. SW Moto said they were shipping another tire today, so we'll see how the next one looks.
