Here is a link to a new style of lockwasher we are looking at at work. They are better than split washers and nylock nuts.

The salesperson has a vibration stand that shows how clamping force goes down with vibration using the other types of locking devices. These Nord-Lock washers actually increase clamping force when they loosen.

I have not used them on my bike as of yet but plan on it when Fastenal starts stocking them at work.

Yeah it was pretty cool, the salesforce has a pretty good demo where they have a vibration rig connected to a computer that measures clamping force. They bolt it up with the various locking devices and you can watch the nuts loosen.

At work we are looking at this for a cooling tower application where the bolts keep loosening. Actually I am looking at it. Management is afraid of anything new, no matter how well it may work. So I showed them this, if they don't use it I will not be tightening any bolts in the future.

Not a new idea, I used them on a cooling tower over 15 years ago. Don't remember if they were called the same thing but they look identical. Did not have any problems with loose bearing bolts after installing them.

I don't know. MSC and Fastenal carry them. Things like this, I usually tell my salesperson that calls on me at work that I have a home project going on and they hook me up.
