I'm getting ready to mount a set of pegs I've had on a newer set of crash bars. Does anyone know a way to keep from buggering up the chrome from a previous position when first getting them setup and adjusted?

And why is the chrome on the K pegs checking and flaking after only a few months of use? That's a little disappointing. They cost more than that.

I run Kuryakyns on both my '83's and haven't had bit of problem with the chrome. MOF one set I bought used from a Harley rider, so they were really used..... I think most of the damage to the crash bar chrome comes from the clamp rotating because it isn't torqued down tight enough. It may also be because to clamp size is too big to tighten. On the 1stGens they have a vertical bracing strut up front. I mounted mine on it using an offset. It allowed the peg to sit farther forward and still keep it tucked in enough to not get in the way.

Put one layer of electrical tape on the crash bar. Temp fit and assemble the foot pegs, tighten only enough to hold to see if they are where you want them, if not move, recheck...when where you want them, mark top and bottom with another different color tape, remove, cut out the center section of tape and peel off carefully with a razor knife, if the pegs are a bit too big for the diameter of the crash bar, make a shim out of aluminum flashing material and make it long enough it will circle the bar, mount the pegs and peel of the remaining tape. As for the pegs themselves peeling and chipping...sounds like bad product, or maybe a wolf in sheeps clothing, like counterfeit stuff that has a name brand on it.
