flb_78 Posted February 13, 2011 #1 Posted February 13, 2011 Ive searched and haven't found any thread about disassembling the forks and replacing the seals and springs. Ive found plenty of threads about how great new springs are, but no step by step procedures.
Freebird Posted February 13, 2011 #2 Posted February 13, 2011 No, unfortunately nobody that I know of has done a writeup on this. I don't think that that many people have changed the springs in the RSV. I know that Rick Butler has but I don't think he took pictures.
1joeranger Posted February 13, 2011 #3 Posted February 13, 2011 I have pictures but nothing involving a detailed write up. I used Rick extensively while changing out mine. This was a first for me and went quite well. See: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55285 Hope this helps. I have more pictures if you want to see em.
jer878 Posted February 13, 2011 #4 Posted February 13, 2011 between Rick's write up, the Clymer book, the oem download and my own brain I was able to change my fork springs. I didn't change any seals. Gotta love the Sonic 1.2's.
Guest Posted February 13, 2011 #5 Posted February 13, 2011 (edited) Ill be doing mine soon with Progressive springs as well as polishing the legs and tubes. Also be doing the G2 mod with new throttle cables. Ill try to take pics if my patience holds up. Edited February 13, 2011 by Ruffy
straycatt Posted February 13, 2011 #6 Posted February 13, 2011 I'll be doing mine around the end of the month. If no one gets to a pictorial by then, I'll do one.
Seaking Posted February 18, 2011 #7 Posted February 18, 2011 I had an independent shop do mine.. I wasn't brave enough to tackle the job myself, unfortunately.. In installed the Progressive Springs, new seals, synth oil, and 0 psi air. Front end dive when applying front brakes is all but gone and the bike sticks to the road a lot better.. After 75,000 miles it really needed it done.. prolly the first time (i'm the 3rd owner).
straycatt Posted February 19, 2011 #8 Posted February 19, 2011 For anybody that has used Sonic Springs, (or any springs for that matter) I have a question. How long are they?? I received my springs from Sonic today, and they are only about 15" long, with spacers that are around 18" long. Every other set of forks I've worked on, the springs have always been closer to the length of only needing a few (3 to 6) inches of spacer. These springs seem pretty short and I'm wondering if they sent the right ones. I'm trying to get all of my part together (springs, seals, fork bushings, etc) so that I can make this a one or two day project with no need to wait for more parts. Thanks
1joeranger Posted February 19, 2011 #9 Posted February 19, 2011 I did not measure the new but, as you can see in the picture, there was a substantial difference!
straycatt Posted February 19, 2011 #10 Posted February 19, 2011 Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for. Plainly the Sonic springs are a lot shorter than stock. It seems like they would be too short to allow for full suspension travel, but they must work the way they are designed. Again, thanks. That sets my mind at ease.
1joeranger Posted February 19, 2011 #11 Posted February 19, 2011 I, like you, thought I had order the wrong spring! Rechecked the invoice and their website and confirmed the right spring had been ordered! Mine came without spacers and I had to contact them and Rick to find out what a spacer was. You will find both very supportive and informative if you decide you need some additional help!!
