The sending unit is simply a wire wound resistor with a sliding wiper... the manual calls for a simple resistance check...

Here is a different angle of the picture mbrood posted above.

 

The copper wiper arm in the center of the picture, rubs along the left side of the wire wound resistor as shown in picture.

 

A known problem with this is the resistor tends to bow in the middle causing the wiper arm to lose contact.

 

At the very left of the picture, there is a small screw that can be loosened to adjust the wiper arm contact tension.
