rumboogy Posted February 10, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 10, 2011 The Little Sturgis Rally in Sturgis, KY has been shut down permanently. The announcement came today and was due to the fact that fair board wanted an EXPONENTIALLY amount of money for renting the grounds for one week. The cost went from $1500 to $17,000. The rally is no more.

rumboogy Posted February 10, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 10, 2011 They made the decision tonight at the board meeting. One of the board members emailed me the decision, but had already gave me a heads up about a week ago. We always took a "crew" of about 10-20 with us over there. Carbon_One Posted February 10, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 10, 2011 With that type of increase I'd guess they didn't want the bikers there anymore. Larry

Solodadof2 Posted February 10, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 10, 2011 It was not like this was a family affair type rallie, I have never been there but have seen plenty of pictures from friends that attended and although I am okay with what i saw many are not. who knows what condition the town was left in. A lot of Rallies the Town gives complete access to the biking community. This town was sending a message or quite possibly a few individuals that are on the board that had gotten offended. seabeetom Posted February 10, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 10, 2011 Hate to hear that. I would guess that it has a lot to do with insurance, and of course greed... We've lost several venues due to insurance premiums. Maybe consider coming on down to Lil' Sturgis here in the 'Hospitality State'. I believe it's held every October, or is it August?? Went a couple of years ago and had a good time. About 25 miles S.W. of Starkville.

I own 155 acres in Southeast (Floyd county) Kentucky that doesn't have anything on it except a barn, a well and electricity. It's way back up a holler about 20 miles from Prestonsburg KY Good (very narrow) blacktop lane. Only problem is that probably 70 percent of the land is on the hill side. Brake Pad Posted February 10, 2011 Share #15 Posted February 10, 2011 sure going to miss that ferry boat ride, and that diner in town, with all those great pies.
zooer Posted February 10, 2011 Share #16 Posted February 10, 2011 I went to the Little Sturgis rally a couple of times and it was definitely an adult affair. Big turn out but a long way to motels after partying all day. As far as any real problems from bikers there, I never saw much of anything. Maybe the state troopers got tired of it, who knows. I know the car washes will hate to see it leave. Never failed to get muddy nasty and you had to ride through it after a day of heavy traffic the grass kind of got real mushy. The pressure washers make a fortune.
aharbi Posted February 10, 2011 Share #17 Posted February 10, 2011 With that type of increase I'd guess they didn't want the bikers there anymore. Larry Or the town got greedy. The only thing they had going for them was the name. Wonder what the merchants had to say. I'm sure the townspeople complained about the rally. Guess they don't realize how easy it is for us to "pack up" and move on down the road, spend our money someplace else. Guess they think we are all RUBs. Brake Pad Posted February 10, 2011 Share #18 Posted February 10, 2011 there was a diner across the street from the grounds. they were the nastiest people. you order, some type of breakfast sandwich, and they bring you scrambled eggs. you ask for toast, they they never come back. forget trying to get a refill on the coffee. the lady said, the cook is only making scrambled eggs today, so enjoy them. what a *****

FuzzyRSTD Posted June 15, 2011 Share #20 Posted June 15, 2011 (edited) http://www.courierpress.com/news/2011/feb/26/rally/ Looks like its still going on. Jude and I will be going. Some good news......... But last week, the fair board with two Sturgis companies, Custom Biker Wear and Cycle Works, said they will keep the rally going, using the dates — July 14-17 — Little Sturgis had scheduled. The new event will be called Kentucky Bikerfest. Mmmm, interesting how the world turns. Seems that Sturgis was jealous of little Sturgis; litigation in U.S. District Court in Rapid City, S.D., where the Sturgis, S.D., Chamber of Commerce is suing Little Sturgis over a possible trademark infringement to its older, more famous biker event, led to the decision to cancel this year's rally. A shame this is happening. Really a human error is taking place here. This event has been going on for so many yrs and helping so many. I have never been to either one. But have read a lot about both events for several yrs. This is no small error people, I am sometimes/a lot of times ashamed of what is going on in our wonderful country. Just because of a few. We should never let/allow these things to happen. Fuzzy Edited June 15, 2011 by FuzzyRSTD

The local authorities in Sturgis have been welcoming to bikers for years, I'd wait to see the reasons before letting my bias show like that in public. Hobscotch Posted June 15, 2011 Share #23 Posted June 15, 2011 Our county lost a Motorcycle Rally in 2010 due to "local" issues. In the final tally, there was no event and the county lost $5 Million in tourism revenues the event generated. Bikers of all sizes and descriptions spend money at these motorcycle events. When they go away, a lot of money goes away from the local economy. Like others, The Little Sturgis demise will be regretted. :whistling:
