Guest Swifty Posted February 5, 2011 #1 Posted February 5, 2011 ....full of other things at the moment... Does the oil filter go on the bolt BEFORE the spring and washer (pic 1) OR Does the spring and washer go on the bolt before the oil filter (pic 2) From what I'm viewing on the parts catalogue it looks like pic 2 should be correct but it's not absolutely clear, (to this mind at the moment) and I'm sure I've taken these parts off the bolt in BOTH configurations. And before a sharp eye notices...YES, I've got a new o-ring on the bolt...these pics are off the spare parts that are piling up too quickly around here.
dingy Posted February 5, 2011 #2 Posted February 5, 2011 I put mine together with the washer against the oil filter. The washer keeps the spring from damaging rubber grommet in filter. I am guessing it is a 1st gen with a handle like Swifty, hard to tell though without going to your profile. Picture #2 Gary
Carbon_One Posted February 5, 2011 #3 Posted February 5, 2011 I would say pic 1 is the correct one. The parts book shows the washer as the 1st part slide on, followed by the "O" ring and then the spring. there's also a spring between the filter and cover. Gary could be right too. Guess it's a toss up eh? Larry

The Spring pushes Filter to the Casing, the Washer save the Rubber Seal from being ripped apart from the Spring.
MiCarl Posted February 5, 2011 #5 Posted February 5, 2011 Pic 2. Good job not throwing the washer out with the old filter. I keep a supply of them on hand because they've often been discarded in a previous oil change.

Picture #2 Gary Unlike many other posts I read, even today, I REPEATEDLY HAVE TO GO INTO THEIR PROFILE TO READ WHAT KIND OF BIKE THEIR QUESTION APPLIES TO BECAUSE THEY POST IN THE WATERING HOLE OF ALL PLACES...however, I put THIS thread in the FIRST GEN TECH TALK!!! I'm fairly confident it is pic 2. Thanks for the replies. So, Larry, I'll wait for you to prove us wrong on this one.

I go with 2nd pic Swifty. Edited February 5, 2011 by Yammer Dan
dingy Posted February 5, 2011 #8 Posted February 5, 2011 (edited) Unlike many other posts I read, even today, I REPEATEDLY HAVE TO GO INTO THEIR PROFILE TO READ WHAT KIND OF BIKE THEIR QUESTION APPLIES TO BECAUSE THEY POST IN THE WATERING HOLE OF ALL PLACES...however, I put THIS thread in the FIRST GEN TECH TALK!!! I didn't think to look at forum where it was posted at. I hardly ever go to the sub forums unless I am looking for an old post. It seems most all of the posts show up in the watering hole. Sorry your Swiftness. Gary Edited February 5, 2011 by dingy
Carbon_One Posted February 5, 2011 #9 Posted February 5, 2011 No problem Swifty. I'm eating crow on this one. Larry
mbrood Posted February 5, 2011 #10 Posted February 5, 2011 Just as Dingy said... picture #2... bolt, spring (4), washer (5) then filter with attached rubber grommets... http://www.bergall.org/temp/venture/oil-filter.jpg
BradT Posted February 6, 2011 #11 Posted February 6, 2011 Unlike many other posts I read, even today, I REPEATEDLY HAVE TO GO INTO THEIR PROFILE TO READ WHAT KIND OF BIKE . If you go to user CP then edit details you can add the type of bike you ride, not what you want, then people do not have to go into your profile to see what type of bike you ride. Brad
Squeeze Posted February 6, 2011 #14 Posted February 6, 2011 Sure, on a GW you need just under four Hours to change the Air Filter ...... or was ist four Hours to get TO the Air Filter ?
Squidley Posted February 6, 2011 #15 Posted February 6, 2011 Sorry your Swiftness. Oh no, never apologize to Swifty, it just makes his head and his ego bigger

Not tobe a pain but I think you need to use that alum. metal cup thingy , that covers the oil filter that bolt gos through , not just use the bolt and spring only to hold the oil filter on , use less oil that way ? anyway thats how we do down here .
Guest Swifty Posted February 6, 2011 #17 Posted February 6, 2011 Tell him Brad Oh no, never apologize to Swifty, it just makes his head and his ego bigger Not tobe a pain but I think you need to use that alum. metal cup thingy , that covers the oil filter that bolt gos through , not just use the bolt and spring only to hold the oil filter on , use less oil that way ? anyway thats how we do down here . Remember, the next time you call me stupid...everything I know has come from Brad and Brad!!!
Eddie Posted February 7, 2011 #18 Posted February 7, 2011 Remember, the next time you call me stupid...everything I know has come from Brad and Brad!!! Now that's scary
Guest Swifty Posted February 7, 2011 #19 Posted February 7, 2011 Now that's scary ...SO NOW you know why my mind needs clarifying once in a while!
BradT Posted February 7, 2011 #20 Posted February 7, 2011 Now that's scary Remember, the next time you call me stupid...everything I know has come from Brad and Brad!!! Yah but most people learn after the first, maybe the second time and some just don't get it. Which one are you ?? Brad
gunboat Posted February 7, 2011 #21 Posted February 7, 2011 own a 2'nd gen as we don't have this problem. don c.
Squidley Posted February 7, 2011 #22 Posted February 7, 2011 everything I know has come from Brad and Brad!!! ...and that would be the genius part of your brain
BradT Posted February 8, 2011 #23 Posted February 8, 2011 ...and that would be the genius part of your brain Too easy
99silver Posted February 8, 2011 #24 Posted February 8, 2011 Your correct Don, they did correct this issue on the 2nd Gen.
Guest Swifty Posted February 10, 2011 #25 Posted February 10, 2011 If you go to user CP then edit details you can add the type of bike you ride, not what you want, then people do not have to go into your profile to see what type of bike you ride. Brad THAT method still involves MORE mouse clicks than if they'd just put it in the correct thread topic to begin with because the topic of the thread can be seen without ANY mouse clicks....it's all about being FAST .......and furious, Ladies and Gentlemen.
