timgray Posted February 4, 2011 #1 Posted February 4, 2011 I've decided that I need to make this bike reliable an ddrive it until it burns to the ground. I love my bike and I believe I can make it 100% reliable again. That said, I dont have the time or space to tackle a 2nd gear fix. the yamaha shops locally will do it for $4200.00 plus parts:sick:. I can buy a 86+ for that with low miles! Does anyone know of someone in Michigan that can fix the 2nd gear for a reasonable amount of money and can be trusted?
Venturous Randy Posted February 4, 2011 #2 Posted February 4, 2011 $4,200 plus parts, how slow are those guys anyway. My first fix cost me $28 when I undercut the gears. The best thing to do it is to buy a complete 86 up gearset as I did a couple of weeks ago. I got it off ebay for about $25 plus $5 more for forks and a few dollars shipping. It is not an easy job, but I think it can be done in a weekend easy. RandyA
bongobobny Posted February 4, 2011 #3 Posted February 4, 2011 Yah!! That price sounds a little high! I bet there are members that would fly in and do it for a lot less!!!!! You should find someone in Mich that would be glad to do it for a lot less money. Of course, if 2nd does go out, some members don't even bother to fix it. They just skip 2nd...
mlew Posted February 4, 2011 #4 Posted February 4, 2011 4200 will buy a couple of Ventures. I just did my 2nd gear, I found a parts bike with a good low mileage motor for 100$. A little paint and polish it looks good as new.
MiCarl Posted February 5, 2011 #5 Posted February 5, 2011 They're worried that they'll get it torn down and need a part that is either is unobtanium or has a long lead time. In the first case they don't get paid and in the 2nd they tie up a valuable lift waiting for parts. They should also be concerned that things will break as they disassemble and they'll have a problem with you over responsibility. So, rather than just say no, they blew you out the door with $$$ signs. If they wanted the job they'd probably have been more in the $2900 + parts range. Would you be willing to bring it over to the sunrise side to get it done? It'd have to be quick or wait until after Thanksgiving. If you can do that I can price it pretty aggressively. In about three weeks I won't be able to afford the risk that it ties up the lift waiting for parts.
timgray Posted February 5, 2011 Author #6 Posted February 5, 2011 I certainly can wait until after Thanksgiving or get it there pretty quickly, I am already skipping 2nd in shifting anyways to limit any additional damage to the gearing. Trailering it across and back would not be a problem at all. timgray1@gmail.com if you want to shoot me a ballpark price and talk more about it.
Venturous Randy Posted February 5, 2011 #7 Posted February 5, 2011 Tim, another option is to pick up another MKII engine and just swap it out. It will still be some work, but take a lot less time. Money wise, if you look around, they do pop up ocassionally. RandyA
Yammer Dan Posted February 5, 2011 #9 Posted February 5, 2011 Or just put a Vmax Engine in there .... :sign yeah that::sign yeah that::sign yeah that: And Increase your Life Insurance!!

dingy Posted February 8, 2011 #11 Posted February 8, 2011 Getting a used engine is like digging into a box of chocolates, As Forest Gump said, "You never know what you are going to get." The used 88 MKII parts bike I got from MiCarl would be an example. I was lucky and got it from someone I trusted to tell me what he knew about the motor. Carl told me the motor had a minor problem. It only had 28,000 miles on it, and was in decent internal condition other then the two pistons on the left side had very tight ring to groove fitmant. Had I not taken it apart, this may have cleared up, but very well may not have. I was able to clean the piston grooves to where they were in spec and work fine. Low mileage does not mean a motor has been taken care of. May actually be the opposite, indicates it has had owners that didn't ride much and may not have cared about maintaining it. Gary
