Freebird Posted January 31, 2011 #1 Posted January 31, 2011 I was asked a while back to install a interface called ForumRunner for the site. It is a program that is supposed to make the site better for those using IPads and Iphones I think. Just a note that I have at least temporarily disabled that program due to excess load on the server. I don't know for sure if it is the culprit but am temporarily disabling features that I have added over the past two or three months in an effort to figure out what is slowing things down.
Owen Posted January 31, 2011 #2 Posted January 31, 2011 I don't know if it is relative or not but I have noticed the site being very slow early in the morning. When I get up around 6am, cst, and have my coffee, the site takes a long time to load. Maybe just a local thing, maybe not. Other sites seem to load at normal speed.
Freebird Posted January 31, 2011 Author #3 Posted January 31, 2011 Thanks. Such comments do help because I can see what kind of tasks are running at various times. ForumRunner may well be causing an issue though because of the way it works. It uses a third party server to "push" information to the users. It runs a script ever 10 minutes to cue information and then sends it to the third party server. Too early to know for sure but it may well be at least contributing to the problem.
Condor Posted January 31, 2011 #4 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) 5:50PST Things are blasting right along if that helps any.... I did notice that it takes a while to upload a reply post. Editing save is very quick...?? Edited January 31, 2011 by Condor
skydoc_17 Posted January 31, 2011 #5 Posted January 31, 2011 Hey Don, As I have been off the site for a few weeks, and am now back on for a very limited amount of time because of my most recent surgery, I was attempting to answer a post in a thread last night around 1:00 AM EST and when I hit the "submit" button to send my post, I got an "Server Error Message" and was booted out of the VR.ORG site. My post was lost. I re entered the VR.ORG site, re wrote the post, and hit the "submit button", it took so long for the post to appear that I finally gave up, and kicked out of the VR.ORG site. Please understand that I am not complaining about this issue, I am merely passing on this information so you can get a handle on the problem. Because I am some what of a "Night Owl" I have always enjoyed the speed of the VR.ORG site during the late, late hours because of the lack of traffic on the site. I am a bit confused as to why the site would be so slow at that hour of the evening, because the use of the site is at a minimum. All of the other sites I visit at that late hour function properly. You do such a great job keeping this site functioning for us that I know this must be a "thorn in your side". I wish you the best of luck finding out what is going on, and admire you for your diligence in dealing with these problems. As far as adding new Apps. to the site goes, Remember the old adage, "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished"! Thanks for all you do, Earl
Guest tx2sturgis Posted January 31, 2011 #6 Posted January 31, 2011 Don, thanks for trying out ForumRunner. It works well on my iPad, but I am not using it as much as I thought I would...I did look over the ForumRunner forum (imagine that, a forum about a forum)..and didnt see any reported issues about it slowing things down. Either way, if it turns out its causing server issues, by all means, I will not have any problem with the decision to jettison the app. It works well in most regards as a reader, for the end user on an iPad, but it does not allow me to post using quick formatting such as bold or underline. I can still do it the old fashioned way using brackets. It also causes a little pop-up notice to show on my iPad when I surf to this site using the normal safari browser, so apparently it is monitoring the user's browser choice, and when it gets a report that the page is being requested by an iPad, it throws up a pop-up telling me I should try out ForumRunner. Thats not a huge deal-breaker, but it IS irritating... Whichever works better on the server side of things, is fine with me.
Freebird Posted January 31, 2011 Author #7 Posted January 31, 2011 Earl, Thanks for your report. I have made some changes that will hopefully help. Let me know if you have problems again tonight. TX, I didn't see any real problems at the forumrunner forum but did find some reports at a VBulletin site. I also found that there had been some upgrades to the program since I installed it. I just installed the latest version and re-enabled it. I'm not even sure that is is causing a problem but just searching for the culprit.
Marcarl Posted February 1, 2011 #8 Posted February 1, 2011 Slow again this morning at 8 am, not dead, just real slow,, and then it's fast,,,, and then it's slow. Just reporting in master.
PBJ Posted February 1, 2011 #9 Posted February 1, 2011 It's odd how the sight was slow about two weeks ago and after you posted a notice about it things picked up. Then toward the end of last week it started to slow down again. As earl said Posting w message or a private message seems to take a long time. I also had an error message that kicked me off over a week ago. but it was not late at night, So maybe with higher traffic it was to be expected. Just my two cents.
slick97spirit Posted February 1, 2011 #10 Posted February 1, 2011 Boss, is Forumrunner supposed to replace tapatalk? Do I need to stop using tapatalk. It's worked really well for me. Ken
friesman Posted February 1, 2011 #11 Posted February 1, 2011 Don, thanks for trying out ForumRunner. Freebird Posted February 1, 2011 Author #12 Posted February 1, 2011 No, forumrunner did not replace Tapatalk. Both are still installed. I'm actually going to remove forumrunner today though.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 1, 2011 #13 Posted February 1, 2011 ForumRunner has updated both the ipad app and the plugins, so I will check things out and let you know, Don....supposedly it includes new features...including quick-formatting...imagine that!
Freebird Posted February 1, 2011 Author #14 Posted February 1, 2011 Yes, I knew that they had updated it and I installed the server side updates here yesterday. Still not sure that it isn't causing some server load issues though. I think I'm probably going to remove it later today.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 1, 2011 #15 Posted February 1, 2011 Ok..just tried it out....let me make a short video of how it looks at this end....before you uninstall it...give me an hour or so...
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 1, 2011 #16 Posted February 1, 2011 I just shot a short video and I'm uploading it to Vimeo...it will take a bit but will let you know when its done.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 1, 2011 #17 Posted February 1, 2011 Well vimeo is STILL taking its time processing....oh well.
BradT Posted February 2, 2011 #18 Posted February 2, 2011 I noticed it being slow in the evenings between 9-11. I thought it was 3 people on the internet at the same time. Tonight seems a little quicker than it has been. Brad
Freebird Posted February 2, 2011 Author #19 Posted February 2, 2011 Yea, I've still not figured out what might be slowing it down. It seems fine again this morning. I will probably end up turning some features off and then turning them back on one at a time until I figure it out.
Freebird Posted February 2, 2011 Author #20 Posted February 2, 2011 By the way Brian, do you use the "Push" features?
