Venturous Randy Posted January 30, 2011 #1 Posted January 30, 2011 After tracing some electrical grimlins associated with the TCI, I am now not able to get any fuel pressure nor any clicking. I checked the fuel pump for conductivity and it has none. I also checked the 85 bike fuel pump for conductivity and it does have conductivity, so it appears my 83 is open. I have even run 12 volts to the fuel pump and it will not do anything. So, does anyone out there have a spare fuel pump laying around? I may take the one off the 85, but my son is currently working thru some carb problems on it and I hate to do that unless I have to. I checked ebay and there are not any "good" deals that are not "Buy it now" and I hate to do that. I appreciate any help. RandyA
Squeeze Posted January 30, 2011 #2 Posted January 30, 2011 You could try a Thing and push the Wires into the Pump. Worked for me, and ever since 4 Years on my Max.

Cut out of MKII manual showing contacts inside pump attached. Gary
bkuhr Posted January 31, 2011 #4 Posted January 31, 2011 Have you checked for voltage and ground at the fuel pump connector, bike side? Lot of safety systems turn fuel pump off, including TCI you stated worked on, tip over switch, side stand system, could be simple as engine stop switch. Suggest use test light.
PBJ Posted January 31, 2011 #5 Posted January 31, 2011 Randya Contact NYJerry several years ago he was riding with some friends far from home when his fuel pump went belly up. He told me he bought a fuel pump from a Napa or some other parts story and wired it in with little problem as a replacement. He even bought and extra one just in case. They were relatively inexpensive. But he never had any trouble with it right up until he sold the bike for his Wing. You'll have to contact him about it though . Good Luck. There may be a thread posted by him on it but I'm not sure. maybe Don could find it if it exists.

It's small and easy to carry a spare. You can buy them at Napa, but perhaps not at the lowest psi to match a Venture. You will have to play around with it a bit to make it fit with the fuel filter, but really not much trouble at all. Even the one sold at Napa should work fine, but it's a slightly higher psi fuel pressure than the stock 1st gen Venture. Such might make idle a bit richer, but not enough to be concerned with. -Don- (but not the same Don mentioned in previous post.)
Carbon_One Posted January 31, 2011 #7 Posted January 31, 2011 I used one similar to this one when I added the auxulary fuel tank. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/MRG0/42S.oap?keyword=electric+fuel+pump&pt=N0515&ppt=C0128 Works great & matches the stock pressure rating. larry
sgn Posted January 31, 2011 #8 Posted January 31, 2011 SGN: can you hear the fuel pump click? RandyA : Yes - checked to hear it several times. SGN: You sure it's working RandyA: yes My oh my .... Sorry Randy could NOT resist .....
DonTom Posted February 1, 2011 #9 Posted February 1, 2011 Just in case . . . Don't assume it's a fuel pump problem until you check the input of the fuel pump! Regardless of the clicking, be sure gasoline is getting to the pump. My fuel petcock screen was clogged and acted just like a bad fuel pump. Just blowing air up the hose by mouth should clean out the fuel petcock and then you can drain the tank. I used an extra section of clean hose. If the gas cap is off you will hear the bubbles, knowing it is working. After draining the reserve, you can remove the fuel petcock (remove the two little screws) to clean out the rest. There will still be some gasoline, so an oil pan should be used under. In my 1984, I could not get the fuel petcock all the way out (without removing the tank!) because the long main screen would not clear. But I could get enough of it out to clean off most of it, without removing the tank. Aim towards the rear brake switch to get most of fuel petcock out. Also, with what seems like a fuel pump problem on the road might be able to be fixed by going to reserve. Or if you keep it on reserve all the time, like I used to, going to the main tank will fix it, if it's just one of the screens clogged of the fuel petcock, like it was with my 1984 Venture. -Don- SSF, CA

snow4brains Posted July 11, 2011 #13 Posted July 11, 2011 Thanks everybody! Reading this thread saved me a lot of time searching for a pump. Just got back from a test ride, after installing one of the Mr Gasket 42S fuel pumps this afternoon. Runs like a mad bull. LOL
