Help!

I'm about ready to punch my monitor.........

Every time I download something from www.freedownloads.com

it ends up not being free............ "EVEN THOUGH THEY SAY SO!"

I've tried and removed the following supposed freeware: Regcure, Pcfix and Tuneup360.

Oh yeah, they do their scans but you have to pay for the activation key!

This is not as they were advertised in the Freeware section.

Anyone know where I can get some FREEWARE to fix windows registry problems?

I need a beer!:bang head:

Thank you, Silvert

You the Man!

Maybe my computer will survive the night:smash2: MAYBE...

Just be careful with it as you can wind up removing stuff you actually need so don't expect ccleaner to "think" for you. It will make assumptions... you have to review and decide. Generally tho, it will tell you what is safe to clean and what is questionable, etc.

Advanced System Care

They have both a free and advanced version, but the free version seems to do everything of value.

They also have other free utilities, such as an excellent defragger, that are better integrated with the pay version, but totally acceptable with the free one.

I'll give that a test ... I've not heard of this one before but have worked with a few different but similar such programs over the years. I still use a program I originally bought when I was "in the business" for cleaning Win98 Registry, etc... called Fix-it Utilities. The company got bought out after a few years and I lost track of what became of newer versions but interestingly enough, my old version still works, even on Windows 7.

I go to Snapfiles.com when I want to download something that is freeware. They always insist that the free stuff is free and doesnt have any malware or adware attached to it. They do have some ads for software on the top third of the page but its a pretty extensive list of software, and they rate it all too.

Thanks guys, I'll probably load them tomorrow as my wife is going to be recuperating from surgery for a deviated septum...Got hit in the nose with a baseball when she was a little girl. She's been getting sinus infections regularly ever since and they are getting worse.

So when they did an MRI the dr ask her what the Heck happened to your nose?

Should be back home with her by 3 as it's outpatient surgery. Got to get this thing running properly so she'll have something to do as "all work" is out for two weeks!

Biggest problem is it's a +5 year old computer with two 256 SDRAM . Can only upgrade to two 512 SDRAM. The way these people are designing web pages nowadays is " the skys the limit" and if you don't have a fast computer and a couple gigs of RAM, tough!

So i figured I'd clean the old girl up a bit first.

Wanted to buy a new computer with at least 3 gig ram... but the wife isn't on board with that. (unless of course something HAPPENS to this one):smash2:

I loaded and used the CCleaner... about an hour ago. I let it select all and take everything out. Will let you know if i can notice any difference...

Thanks again for all your help.

I usethe adavanced System Care - free version. works VERY well.

i

I also use malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/the free version.

FOr MAlWAREBYTES, I boot in safe mode (fit F8 when booting up) and start windows in a safe mode. This prevents any bad software from booting up and preventing the scanner from doing it's job.

A lot of those Free system scans...actually deposit malware on your pc, for htem to fix... causing you to pay them $$

the Advanced System Care is not, nor is Malwarebytes.

I usually run them, re-boot, and run again to make certain all is gone.

You should be able to run 256/512 until you get two 512 sticks. I have a 512 for free, if you want it. I may be able to dig up two. I have alot of old stuff. Also if you are using "onboard" graphics card. It makes a big diff if you install a dedicated vid card. Have that for free also. You pay shipping. SuperAntiSpyware is a good virus tool as is Malewarebyte and Windows Defender....From Microsoft. Is good to. I bought the pro version of SAS cause it worked so well on something I had. It has a "realtime" scan that I run 24/7 also. It all helps but you can allways step in it...lol Ctrl+Alt+Del is your freind if you see some AVS warning crap popup on you. Hit it fast and cancel it,explorer etc. Sometimes this will save you from the nastys.

What speed memory does your system take? I have a couple of 512MB PC333 sticks you can have.

I also have an ATI 9700 All-in-Wonder video card - this was a very high-end card back when your system was new. You can have that too, if it will help.

Ditto on that. I've tried others but keep coming back to Advanced.... I did upgrade and then my HD crashed during a lightening storm and I lost the program. I just went ahead and downloaded the Free version and it's doing fine. I suppose I could contact them to see if they still have a record of the upgrade, but I can't see much gain.
