rumboogy Posted January 19, 2011 #1 Posted January 19, 2011 First, please forgive my PRIMITIVE art. I am still thinking on the fairing broken tab fix thing... Would this type of set up be possible. A strong brace with three holes, one attached to the bottom speaker bolt, the top one attached to the fairing METAL STRIP and then a second brace that a has a wing (T shaped) that fits FLAT against the fairing and held in place with JB Weld (the wing would give more surface area for the glue to hold). Once the glue has cured, this brace would then be attached to the first brace. This setup might provide a LOT of stability for the METAL STRIP and windshield. The braces would have to cut precisely (so as to not pull to much against the fairing), and also would involve some bending. Here is a VERY bad drawing and the 2nd brace does not show the WING I think would be best for securing it to the fairing. I see no reason to have it replaced if it just gonna break again. I would rather fix it for good. Comments, suggestions and SOME LAUGHTER is appreciated. Wally
Carbon_One Posted January 19, 2011 #2 Posted January 19, 2011 I did something similar to my bike long ago. Instead of flat metal I used a washer under the respective screws and brazed a rod to connect them.
Eck Posted January 19, 2011 #3 Posted January 19, 2011 You have a very good idea there, and I am certain it will work well. When I fixed mine, I used a piece of heavy gauge preferated metal stip about 1.5 inches long and cut it to fit after twisting it 90 degrees from one end to the other.. worked great..
rumboogy Posted January 19, 2011 Author #4 Posted January 19, 2011 Thanks Eck...I think this is the fix I am going to try. My only concern (but I think it will be alright) is the JB Weld on the plastic fairing, and any reaction it might have...but I think it will work.
Freebird Posted January 19, 2011 #5 Posted January 19, 2011 I used JB Weld on my left lower. I applied it to the inside where it had cracked. It has been there for about 6 years now and has held well and did not damage the plastic.
rumboogy Posted January 19, 2011 Author #6 Posted January 19, 2011 Thank you Don...that's good enough for me. I will proceed with this repair in this manner in the next month or so. I will take pics of the repair when I do it (in case it works). Thanks again. Wally
kj5ix Posted January 19, 2011 #7 Posted January 19, 2011 Maybe a little 60 or 80 grit sand paper to scuff up the area you put the JB, That will help the bond to the ABS.
rumboogy Posted January 19, 2011 Author #8 Posted January 19, 2011 Thanks...I will do that for sure... Wally
