If I lend my bike to my son, who has a cycle endorsement, do I have to worry about any legal issues if he decides to take a passenger?

I know my motorcycle insurance will cover lending the bike to someone legal to ride, as long as it is not more than a certain number of times a year to the same person, after that they need to be added to the policy.

But is there any other things I need to be aware of?

The big issue is liability. If in the event of an accident, the passeger's lawyer will go after everyone connected with the incident. This includes you, your son and any other vehicles involved including all the insureds on the list. I carry a 1,000,000 dollar liability rider on all my policies.

Exactly!!! and in this day and age, 1 mil is nothing ... and you could be on the hook for a lot more.

I would think that it would be no different than loaning your car to someone and a passenger getting hurt. It is your insurance that will get your sons portion of the bill.

But if the court decides a larger amout of money that the insurance covers, then the excess is passed on to all parties that the lawyers can find.

I asked my agent about riding passengers once because I was riding my wifes cousin sometimes. My agent said that the passenger was assuming some of the risk just by volunteering to get on the bike. I would have to do something really negligent before my insurance would cover her.

1,000,000 $ is nothing in this day. My wife has 10,000,000 on her van... she carries others children in the van. If the son takes the pretty blonde from down the road for a ride and something happens.... you bet her mom and dad are going to look for more than just a million.
