Just attended the funeral procession for a well respected police officer here in Toronto. Normally I would not do this type of post, but the event was so amazing and moving. Close to 10,000 officers marched 8 abreast (over 1/2 a mile long) to honor this officer who was killed on duty by a mentally ill homeless man driving a stolen snow plow. Officers from across Canada marched, as well as some from the US. Our fellow VentureRider, Dogman (Dave), marched with his dog and other Toronto Canine Unit officers and I suspect there were others marching.

I agree with the comment, "they don't get the respect for what they do" to a point. MOST LEOs are really good guys who work hard at keeping us safe, but unfortunately there are a few who put a sour taste in your mouth for all of them. Driving charter buses down here for so long I have been involved in all sorts of special events where I had police escorts or ride-alongs for security. Most officers are cordial but keep an emotional distance. But I have had a few that seem to be on a power trip and are downright a$$holes. Then there are the DOT inspectors who couldn't smile if their life depended on it.

I was watching the news yesterday and saw where one town in New Jersey was laying off 160 officers, and another that had let 100 go. That will be real good news to the criminal element in those areas. If I lived there I would be packing every place I went. I guess its going to be more and more up to the citizens to protect themselves and their property. Works for me-----just don't try to drag me in to court after I shoot someone trying to break into my house or steal my car. Thank goodness they changed the law here in Mississippi; We don't have to drag the body in the house anymore !!

My prayers go out to the family of your fallen officer. !!!!

There is 3 LEO in my family, brother, cousin and nephew..... I am always thinking of them when I see a tributes like we watched on tv from Toronto last night.

Thoughts and prayers to his and all LEO families every day. My nephew lives next door... every day I worry when he leaves and smile when he returns.

At the airport I worked with city police, drug squad and RCMP in an unofficial capacity. To me they were just regular guys doing a difficult job. There was the occasional jerk but most of them were in traffic detail (wonder why).

Thanks for the posting OP. A friend of mine is an officer up there and was good friends with the deceased officer.

And guys, please keep the negative comments out of this thread. Even if it's prefaced with a flattering comment. Not the time.

...and an unbelievable amount of courage shown by his widow getting up to speak in front of thousands of people within a week of his death without losing total control of her composure; amazing.

Thanks for posting that link Swifty.... the photos are touching. The widow... what I believe is behind a real good cop is a very strong family support. The lady is unbelievably strong.

God speed to her and her child.
