CrazyHorse Posted January 12, 2011 #2 Posted January 12, 2011 Average price $1,000,000 for a home. What kind of money you all make up there and what do you do for a living. I often wonder that when I watch HGTV house hunters what do they do for a living. WOW
KeithR Posted January 12, 2011 #3 Posted January 12, 2011 Typical news story.....show the worst of the worst in housing! Believe me there are many homes in excess of $1,000,000 in Newfoundland. Most of those pictures in the story look like cabins by the sea to me. Ok I'll stop now! Keith

Keith yep, they do but even places like those would sell for well over 100k here. As for homes in excess of 1 mil out here .... there's tons and tons of them. Average price for a single, standard detached home in Vancouver = $800,000 Average price for a single, standard detached home in St John's = $250,000 (a guesstimate)

I often wonder that when I watch HGTV house hunters what do they do for a living. WOW To be honest, I couldn't afford most homes around here. We rent our house. It's a 35+ yr old 3 bdrm house on a nice yard with single car garage and an above ground 1 bdrm suite which is also rented out (we rent the main floor & the garage). For what we pay for rent (which we can afford) we'd be lucky if we could buy a 2 bdrm + den townhouse. As for work/income, I'm a network administrator for a small call centre and I make appx 2/3 - 3/4 of what my USA counterpart would make.

kevin-vic-b.c. Posted January 13, 2011 #13 Posted January 13, 2011 Some houses sell for over assessed some sell for less. Mom paid 18,000 for her house in 1957 and it was assessed for taxes this year at 640,000. It would likely sell for 550 at best. My house is assessed at about 500,000 and if I wanted to sell it today I could get closer to 600. But then I would have to go buy the new one at 750 to replace it... and the new one would not have a yard. I am just glad I bought it 18 years ago when it was less than 1/2 the assessed price. My old house .... we sold for 100,000 more than we paid for it 7 years before. As a qualified tradesman I made a good living with many hours of overtime per year to help more... but the wife and kids can still spend it as fast as I can make it. :mo money:
