Smely Posted January 12, 2011 #1 Posted January 12, 2011 With all of the snow here in GA and only 8 snow plows for the entire state, and me climbing the walls I decided to start tinkering with my bike. There have been a lot of threads out there about what to do with the tape deck so after reading many of them and taking a little from what everyone else has done, this is what I came up with. It came out pretty nice. Big enough to put cell phones, ipods, extra cords or whatever. Finally, a reason to open that door
Eck Posted January 12, 2011 #3 Posted January 12, 2011 Very nice..... Hope there is a drain hole for rain water or when you wash it...
Smely Posted January 12, 2011 Author #5 Posted January 12, 2011 (edited) Very nice..... Hope there is a drain hole for rain water or when you wash it... Ummmmmmm............AhOhhhhhhhhhhh. I see re-work down the road. Hopefully not, didn't have a problem with water in there before and I went through some pretty good monsoons. The original box for the tape deck has holes in it and it is just foam inside so should water get in it should just drain out (I hope). Edited January 13, 2011 by Smely
Carbon_One Posted January 12, 2011 #6 Posted January 12, 2011 Good job Smely. I'v been thinking of doing that mod for a while myself, just hadn't gotten around to doing it. Seeing your post now reminds me to getr done. Larry
Chinto Posted January 12, 2011 #7 Posted January 12, 2011 Did you keep (relocate) the auxiliary plug that was on the cassette player? Your new glove box would be a great place to have that plug in for an mp3 and/or a usb port to charge the phone and/or mp3. Looks great

Your new glove box would be a great place to have that plug in for an mp3 and/or a usb port to charge the phone and/or mp3. Looks great I actually just picked up all of the parts from Radio Shack to move the aux plug. I bought the 3 way splitter and am going to run an extension to my navigator, an extension through the back of the box for an mp3 player and leave the extra for down the road accessories. I also want to install a micro USB auto charger like this one, as seen on a previous thread but not real sure how it hooks up. Has anyone installed this before? Is it hard wired or do I need to get a cigarette light adapter? exrsa1 Posted January 12, 2011 #9 Posted January 12, 2011 The one you show in your post, plugs into a 12V outlet or a cigarette lighter. Check out www.burnsmoto.com. They have a USB plug that you can hardwire and mount anywhere you want, as well as every electrical connector you could ever want.
Seaking Posted January 12, 2011 #10 Posted January 12, 2011 Yep actually a very simple setup.. you could actually re-route the one from the lower left fairing up to that hole.. You've given me a good idea for that empty space.. THANKS!

I missed your post by about 20 minutes. I already ordered the flush mount one and I think I'm going to try to adapt that one. But, I'm sure that I will need burnsmoto on many other projects. Thanks again.

Finally, a reason to open that door Can you elaborate a little more on what you used as the box and liner etc for this mod? I'm picking up electrical parts to complete this mod as I can now charge batteries for my cameras and helmet cams and smartphones (IT geek that needs to be connected all the time sigh) Thanks M8
Bobby G Posted January 19, 2011 #16 Posted January 19, 2011 Nice job Smely. Can't wait to see it in person. The snow is gone, so we'll be riding soon! If you are bored on one of your off days anytime soon, c'mon over and we'll do some bike rippin and you can show me how easy it was! I've still got to split the fairing anyway to do the repair on my LocTite-damaged wind deflector screw protrusions.
Smely Posted January 25, 2011 Author #17 Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) Can you elaborate a little more on what you used as the box and liner etc for this mod? I'm picking up electrical parts to complete this mod as I can now charge batteries for my cameras and helmet cams and smartphones (IT geek that needs to be connected all the time sigh) Thanks M8 Sorry, Had to get a few days of work out of the way. The box is the same box that houses your tape player guts right now. You will have to split your front faring, then you will have to remove your amp. (it is sitting over the tape deck and has all of the wire harnesses for the audio running into it). Undo the 4 bolts on top holding on the securing straps. Slide the amp out to the side and you will see the tape deck sitting below. four bolts holding the box on the sides of the tape deck and then open the front door and there will be 2 screws to remove. Once you have these out, the box will bee free. I had to remove the 2 bolts securing the head light and that let me move the head light enough out of the way to get the tape deck out. Once you have the tape deck out, remove the 2 screws on top and the lid will come off (after removing all of the tamper proof tape). Then just remove all of the screws that will allow you to gut all of the tape deck workings out of the box. DO NOT REMOVE THE SCREWS SECURING THE DOOR MECHANISM, if you still want to keep the door. I then used a dremel to rout out as much as I could on the front face plate to allow me to keep the door and also replace the front two screws. I tried to make it as factory looking as possible. Next, find some foam pieces and some 3M spray glue (Home Depot) and some felt or material (WalMart) and line the box with foam pieces and finally cover it all with the fabric of your choice. I just pulled it all back out and installed a power point and the USB adapter I pictured previously. I also ran the aux plug through the back. Turned out pretty good. I can now charge my phone or MP3 player while listening to tunes. Edited January 25, 2011 by Smely

Just got my truck back from TMT. He got the transmission going on it again for me. Got it home today. I was riddin' dirty because it hasn't been registered since '06.
Seaking Posted January 25, 2011 #19 Posted January 25, 2011 Many thanks for the details.. unfortunately the previous owner had gutted out the box and everything to install a radar detector in there.. egads.. i didn't know it was there when I purchased the bike.. not realizing the door actually opened.. it just looked like a press fit panel just for the decorations.. Imagine my shock when my buddy showed me where the tape deck is located.. and to find a fully functioning LiDar detector in there.. which is highly illegal to possess in a vehicle here in Nova Scotia.. WOW. Out that thing went!! lol No wonder I was getting weird looks from the cops.. Looks like I'll have to build up a box to slip into there.. You photos are cool as they show how I can hook up the cables and such.. great idea to foam pad the box to keep the phone and devices from banging around in there.. thanks again!
Smely Posted January 25, 2011 Author #20 Posted January 25, 2011 You can always go this route If you want to go back to the original door.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Royal-Star-Venture-Cassette-Player-Tape-Radio-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem588c20359cQQitemZ380308043164QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
Seaking Posted January 25, 2011 #21 Posted January 25, 2011 Smely, not sure if you directed the URL for me, but I do have the door intact on the bike, it's just the box area inside that's gone. I'll have to fabricate a hobby box to fit behind there to hold all the toys now.. and foam line it.. Just got my USB connector gear today so I'll have some fun projects to work on this week Cheers
