Sideoftheroad Posted December 29, 2010 #1 Posted December 29, 2010 Anyone have a spare cable like this they aren't using? I don't care to pay $35 for a cable on a unit that is as old as this model. Kids got ahold of the cable one day and can't get the unit to power on anymore. :-( Or tell me how I can hardwire it to the bike. Thanks
ablumny Posted December 30, 2010 #2 Posted December 30, 2010 I have the same unit. Unfortunately the only way to get sound out of it is through the speaker/ power adapter. Garmin also makes a hard wire kit that has a 1/8 audio jack on it the could be plugged into an audio system (that's what I did) but that cable is almost as much as the speaker version. There are plenty of cheap AC adapters on eBay. If you don't care for sound, you could plug in the adapter and with a meter figure out where the Dc 12 volts is , clip the ac off and hard wire it that way? http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=garmin+2730&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Sideoftheroad Posted December 30, 2010 Author #3 Posted December 30, 2010 I am not so concerned w/ sound. Sounds like I will have to cut the cable, probably just before the is and check which wire registers 12v (hopefully only 1). Then I could run a wire from there to the bike. Only problem is I don't know which end of the cable is not working. It could the end that connects to the GPS. I guess no harm, no foul since it isn't working anyway. Can't make it any worse. My options would be to try it and if it works then cheap fix. If it doesn't then I would be forking out some $$$ for new cable unless someone has a spare one I could have.
naturbar Posted December 30, 2010 #4 Posted December 30, 2010 " Only problem is I don't know which end of the cable is not working"....... if you have a pair of dental picks and a DVM (use the diode setting if it has it - it produces a tone when + & - are shorted) - pierce the sheath at intervals to try to locate the broken connection....just a thought.......
