I got a 4 brush VMaxstarter off Ebay for my Venture. $60 with shipping.

Came off a 92 with 26k miles on it. Sandblasting and powder coating will clean it up like new.

1990 and newer 1st gen VMax's have the 4 brush starter.

There have been a few questions on here about this starter. It should crank better than the stock Venture 2 brush starter.

Doing the grounding wire mod will be harder to do, since there is not much room on the brush plate to attach the additional ground wire.

Also shown is a stock 2 brush starter brush plate for comparison.

Hey Gary,

Here is a question that I have been asked a few times. Does it look like a 4 brush plate could be installed in a 2 brush housing to convert it?

When I changed out my 2 brush for a 4 brush I was in such a hurry to get the bike running again I never took a close look at it. Just a quick eyeball told it would not work.

But....I know you are a talented tinkerer......so I'll let you field that issue.

Brushes on 4 brush are 90 deg opposed to each other, seems to me brushes on my 2 brush are a little less than 90 deg from each other-could be wrong, Gary can check, but if true, swapping brush holders would require corresponding swap of armature for proper windings to energize.

The four brush starter plate would probably fit into the 2 brush starter, but that is not the problem.

The windings are configured differently. All 4 windings on the two brush starter are connected in series. On the 4 brush starter there are two windings each in 2 separate circuits.

If you look at the pictures above, there are 2 positive wires going down to the windings, 1 on each positive brush 180 degs. apart. It would be difficult to reconfigure these windings.

There is a hole on the negative brush holder that I can use for the extra ground wire. It is shown a little better in picture below. The negative brush at 6 o'clock position has a hole just to right of it that can be used.
