Rim Grand Canyon, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Mesa Verde, Zion Park, all together 16 us states, 2 Canadian Provinces 8,675 miles in 21 days. Oh for the good old days!
silvercrew Posted November 11, 2007 #3 Posted November 11, 2007 I haven't taken the bike there but I have taken the truck there. What are you wondering about the area?
BradT Posted November 12, 2007 #4 Posted November 12, 2007 Been there in a car but not on the bike. Very nice area. We do have a member that lives very close. (I am sure hes been there many times) Brad
Kregerdoodle Posted November 12, 2007 Author #5 Posted November 12, 2007 I haven't taken the bike there but I have taken the truck there. What are you wondering about the area? I now live in Texas, and am just wondering about the best time of year to go, would going through Glacier and going to Sun hiway be the best route ?? My sister still lives between Polson and Missoula and plan on stopping in on them for a day or 2, I will probably only have 3 weeks so need to plan things out pretty good to get in all the good sites that I want to see....
brscooter Posted November 12, 2007 #6 Posted November 12, 2007 Be sure and go to the lake behind Lake Louise. It is Moraine Lake (not sure of spelling) and it is beautiful. They have a hotel type place you can stay in there if you make reservations.
SilvrT Posted November 12, 2007 #7 Posted November 12, 2007 I now live in Texas, and am just wondering about the best time of year to go, The best time is in the early spring when snow skiing is best coz Lake Louise is famous for it's snow skiing. Seriously though, late July, early Aug is probably the best for summer as the weather is the warmest then.... as for weather, it can vary a lot in spring, summer and fall; however, it's generally not bad once the spring rains have passed. I lived in Calgary, Alberta from '82 thru '92 and rode my Wing through Banff / Lake Louise many times on my way to British Columbia to visit in-laws. Never really had a need to stay overnight there but it's definately beautiful country and if you're into nature & hiking...you can't go wrong there.
sarges46 Posted November 12, 2007 #8 Posted November 12, 2007 Its nice in that whole area. But, it is expensive and caters to wealthier folks. Ski season is nice but summer is great there as well. Been there for both. Dont go before the end of June if riding as the climate can change in a heartbest and you could wake up to snow one morning. Riding is very nice but keep in mind that area...is a major wildlife migration route and there are many large critters on the roads....anything from elk to grizzly bear...particularly in the early mornings and evenings around dusk.
silvercrew Posted November 14, 2007 #9 Posted November 14, 2007 I agree in mid to late june/july/august would be the best times. I have only been on the road to the sun one time in a car. We were married in may and a few years back went to whitefish for a holiday and it was closed so don't go to early or snow becomes a factor. Whitefish was a nice place also if you have some time. Waterton is nice and you can cross the boarder real close to it, it is like a little Banff or Jasper. It might be a good place to spend the night on the way to Banff after the road to the sun ride. When we go to Banff area we usally stay in Canmore it is out of the park, a nice little joint it to Banff/Lake Louise and it is cheaper. If you are camping most of the campgrounds in the park don't take reservations they are first come first served. If there is anything else you need or want to know just ask and I will help the best I can.

86er Posted November 27, 2007 #12 Posted November 27, 2007 Thanks alot for the info !! I may need a month off for this trip... Thanks again! Take the month! And as you go up you need to do Beartooth Pass (link). Because it is absolutely awesome! And while you are right there you need to do the Chief Joseph Hiway (link). The pictures below are of my GPS and a look "down the road" on Beartooth. Just be sure that you buy gas before or after Cooke City! I was there this summer and passed up $2.50 gas in Yellowstone Park thinking it would be cheaper outside. I was on fumes when I got to Cooke City. Two gas stations....both at $3.09/gal! Then go up and do the Going To The Sun Highway. And it is best done from the west to the east. That puts you on the side that drops off.
