dkip Posted December 18, 2010 Author #5 Posted December 18, 2010 Had four people in the car on our way to the airport. Nobody hurt other than stiff necks. Not a scratch on anybody, still made it to airport to catch our flight. Not sure how insurance will work out just glad to be alive dale
RedRider Posted December 18, 2010 #6 Posted December 18, 2010 The wonders of modern design. If you were in an older, albeit heavier car, all the energy from the crash would have translated from the rear bumper, thru the heavy frame, to you. With this design, you see the rear crumple zone accepted the energy from the other car and translated very little forward. Note there is little damage or distortion ahead of the rear door. It worked the way it was designed. Sorry, the engineer in me just thrust up its head. Glad you came out alright. Being able to walk away from this should be another reason for a Merry Christmas. RR
Snaggletooth Posted December 18, 2010 #7 Posted December 18, 2010 Dang! Double Dang!! Glad everyone is ok. Now I got to ask......you were on the way to the airport right? Luggage was.......in the trunk? So it's carry on sized now? But seriously, glad you are walking and talking. Mike
Monty Posted December 18, 2010 #8 Posted December 18, 2010 That was a pretty good hit! Glad you're ok. Gonna be more sore tomorrow and the next day. The soreness usually takes a bit to kick in. Hope it's not too bad.
dkip Posted December 18, 2010 Author #9 Posted December 18, 2010 The accident happened on Dec 3 We don't seem to have any after effects We shut down the 401 highway for about an hour for the police and ambulances to clean up mess. Four hours later we were in the Caribbean self medicating with rum. The airport people put or luggage in plastic bags for us to keep them intact. It was a little difficult to get our luggage out of the trunk in the first place. dale
dynodon Posted December 18, 2010 #10 Posted December 18, 2010 Dale, That was a hard hit! Please take it from someone that knows about neck/spine injuries first hand, that ALL of you should get checked out by a physician for neck/spine trauma. The slight soreness that you all had, went away in a couple of days, but in 15 years you could have some serious trouble! I had a roll-over accident (was a passenger, unbelted, back in the 70's) and had nothing more than a slight sore neck. After about 15-20 years I noticed that I couldn't turn my head as much as I should be able to. The injury caused vertebrae to fuse over time, and now I can't look over my shoulder either way. Edit: Also I am told by Doctors that if I am ever in a bad accident and my neck gets twisted or moved a lot, I could wind up paralyzed or dead. If I had known that this would happen, I could have done some simple exercises on a regular basis to reduced the long-term damage. Do NOT under any circumstances assume you are 100% OK, get checked out and talk to a spine/neck specialist about long term effects and what you should do. This may or may not be something that insurance will need to get involved with, at least after the initial visit, but go get checked out. IF someone had given me this advice 40 years ago, I would still have a functional neck today.
mini-muffin Posted December 18, 2010 #11 Posted December 18, 2010 Guess somebody thought you needed a compact car. Glad all came out ok, and darn what a way to recoup in the carribean. Glad you didn't miss out on your trip either. Hope the insurance bit goes well for you. Margaret
RandyR Posted December 18, 2010 #12 Posted December 18, 2010 Glad to hear you're ok. A little sunshine and rum will drive out the demons...
Crash Posted December 19, 2010 #13 Posted December 19, 2010 I agree with DYNODON. Get checked out. I was hit by a county snow plow back in 2007 and did go to the hospital with neck, back and head injuries. I'm still suffering from neck problems and permanent headaches.
GeorgeS Posted December 19, 2010 #14 Posted December 19, 2010 I thought it was Snowing back East !! Why no snow in the photo's ????
gunkylump Posted December 19, 2010 #15 Posted December 19, 2010 Glad you and the rest of your travelling friends are ok Dale! The 401 is one heck of a piece of road, no doubt about that. The car can be replaced, but your health is a different story. How did you end up getting to the airport? gunk:thumbsup2:
dkip Posted December 19, 2010 Author #16 Posted December 19, 2010 THere's no snow because it happened on Dec 3 before the snow started in our area. Roads and weather was clear. I had to slow down to about 80kmh for traffic when we got hit from behind. Tow truck driver arranged for a rental car to be delivered at interchange and police asked me to fill out as much off the report as I could till the rental got there. The emergency people working that highway certainly earn there money dale
Lilsis Posted December 20, 2010 #17 Posted December 20, 2010 I also agree with dynodon and Crash. I was hit from behind in '85. I have neck, back and jaw problems. The exercises from the Drs and the Dentist were and are a god send. Please get checked out. Better safe than sorry.
Zfrebird4 Posted December 20, 2010 #18 Posted December 20, 2010 ... the years. I had two, in 1965 and 66, and am now 71 and still suffer from my neck whiplashes. Don't settle too soon, and use LOTS of med resources. Glad you were able to walk away from it all. See you on two wheels someday .... Jack Z
