Need some help.

Searching for a tach that will work with the 2ndGen and it's driving me nutz... I remember something about a wasted spark discussion a while back, and have also run into D.I.S. ignition (or distributorless ignition) discussions. I'm not sure what we have??... and what to look for?? I'm trying to find a 2 1/2" dial tach with a matching 2" engine temp gauge. I did run into a couple of gauge styles... some pretty pricy.... but until I know exactely what I need it's kinda wasted motion. Anyone know exactely what I should be looking for, and also comes in an antique/chrome look??

I know what you mean on pricey, I look at barons and that was around 250.

V7 goose has a neat looing set set up and he wrote one of his famous tech article on how to install one and what kind you need it was something about a single and dual fire.

I can't remember all of it but it is the tech section..

When I price teh one he has it was less than 100.00

The Ventures use a "wasted spark" ignition. That means each coil fires every revolution instead of every other that is required to run the engine. The "wasted spark" happens at the end of the exhaust stroke when there is nothing to fire.

 

Since electronic tachometers watch the trigger signal to an ignition coil the tach needs to be set up to match the ignition type or it'll read 1/2 or 2x the actual RPM.

Part number DS244133 which is the white faced one.. I had also ordered a black faced one since my bike is a Midnight but it was a little harder to see the needle at night, it got lost in the light for some odd reason, but the white faced one isn't glaring and works great..

 

I have mine mounted to the right side of the centre on the bars. Great price and it works great.. easy installation.

Thanks, I do have a question though, it looks like it pointed down more do you have the room to turn it up some?

I'm so sorry you have to go in your HEATED garage, unlike me who doesn't have heat in the garage cause it would only need it 3 months out of the year, so I could not see puting a unit in for that..

yes, it's pointed down somewhere which isn't a problem at all, especially at night with the lit gauge. I have the extended risers on my bike so that changes where I can put the gauge. Some people put it up higher on the bar, I preferred it lower. You do have options. Later this winter I'll be fabricating a new bracket to bring it away from the dash though.

 

Heated garage is great up here.. I have in floor glycol liquid heating on a timer. Between 11pm and 7am I only have to pay 1/2 the electrical rate to heat the slab, on a special rates plan. Between 7am and 11pm, the heater is turned off as the slab retains all it's heat for the day.. I'm in the garage just about every day working on two bikes (Custom built 11 VStar and the RSV) so it works out great.

Thanks for the feedback. According to Goose I can expand my search to include Harley type tachs. Now the search will be for something that will fit. The 2 1/4" mini tach at 3" including the besel is at the absolute max. It's going to be a tight fit. This is what I'm dealing with.

Have you thought about taking a mold of that pod?

Given it some thought. It does need to be reworked a bit. The holes for the two tank screws are way bigger than those on a EOM cover, and the OEM keeper pin, up front, is missing. It sorta looks like a keeper pin on the side covers of a first gen..... As it sits now it won't work, but we'll figure it out....

I've never seen a cover/instrument pod like those in the photos. Where did you find that? Was it made for another type of bike? I think it's cool.

Heated slab? I have a slab house here we don't get that cold and if we do it doesn't stay that long..I have read about heated slabs, but I thought it was water not glycol, interesting to say the least..

Use glycol in the slab for the same reasons u use it in your bike or car, to stop corrosion and in case of a heat failure in the home, it wont freeze. If those pipes corrode or plug inside the slab its a fairly major job to fix...

Around here if its -30 and your furnace quits things start to cool off real quickly, at least the glycol buys you some time before bad stuff like freezing starts to happen.

The slab is a "heat retention medium" which qualifies for Time of Day Rates here in NS. You set to heat the slab at night when the rates are 50% cheaper and turn it off during the peak hours (day time). Last winter when it got to the -15'C range (for here, that's cold cold, not like it gets in Sask!).. I turned off the heat when the inside read +15'C.. after three days it was still above 10'C inside the garage.. the slab DOES retain it's heat nicely.. I keep it at 14'C (57'F) and that's plenty warm to work on the bikes etc.. the trick is to keep the humidity down when working, but keep it normal when sitting..

 

Glycol is used so that the whole system can be shut down and not freeze. It only adds about $200 to the overall costs of having the system laid down installed before pouring the slab so why not.

 

Its the cold 20 ft walk from house to garage that sucks =)
