Monty Posted December 12, 2010 #1 Posted December 12, 2010 Well, my oldest Son's house caught fire today. It started out on his deck. We got the fire trucks here pretty quick. My adrenaline was pumping, so I just grabbed the line off the truck and told them to charge it, and we got it put out before anything inside the house burnt. He lost a wall, that we had to open up, and the deck. No damage to contents, except for a futon that was sitting by that window. Pipes will probably freeze now, since the power is off. Luckily, everyone got out, although he and I both got lots of smoke. It's a rental house. We called the landlord, and then moved their stuff out to the sheds, and down to our house. They'll be staying with us until they figure something out. The Fire Chief had the gall to ask me if I wanted my old job back...lol. I said no thanks. Everyone is safe, and all is well for now...except it's snowing like crazy. Kinda puts a damper on their Christmas too.
BIG TOM Posted December 12, 2010 #2 Posted December 12, 2010 Your son is still with you ...count your blessings and now you both have something to be thankful for. You can spend the Christmas season together..... Think of how much worse it could have been......
ADC Posted December 12, 2010 #3 Posted December 12, 2010 Hope all gets back to normal soon and thankfull it wasn't any worse than it was. Arthur
Monty Posted December 12, 2010 Author #4 Posted December 12, 2010 Yup. I'm glad it didn't happen at night when they were in bed. The smoke alarms worked at least, and the correct breakers tripped. At least everyone is healthy, and they got most of their belongings too. We live 100 yards away, so that makes things easier.
RandyR Posted December 12, 2010 #5 Posted December 12, 2010 be gald your Son is OK. It'll be a cozy Christmas.

Guest scarylarry Posted December 12, 2010 #8 Posted December 12, 2010 Damn I'm sorry Monty if you need anything call me, I'll be there..
Monty Posted December 12, 2010 Author #9 Posted December 12, 2010 How did it start? We think it was the drop light he had in the doghouse to keep the dog warm. Just a regular shop light with 60 watt bulb. I think the dog may have knocked it down on top of a blanket. Not sure yet, but that's most likely what happened.
utadventure Posted December 12, 2010 #10 Posted December 12, 2010 Glad the damage is managable and everyone is alright! Crack open one of the faucets in the house and lets the water run slightly and the lines won't freeze that way. No need to have to redo a wall and broken water lines! Dave
Freebird Posted December 12, 2010 #11 Posted December 12, 2010 Really sorry to here this Monty but glad that everybody is OK. There is never a good time for such things to happen but this time of the year is especially bad.
Marcarl Posted December 12, 2010 #12 Posted December 12, 2010 We're thinking of you Monty,,,, glad you are able to count blessings, rather than losses. For now everybody involved with the move in might need to have an attitude adjustment,,,, not that there would be any BAD attitudes, but everything is relative, even the relatives.
bongobobny Posted December 12, 2010 #13 Posted December 12, 2010 I agree with the title of this thread Monty! It could have been a lot worse!! Glad no one was hurt or worse. The wall can be replaced as well as the deck...
N3FOL Posted December 12, 2010 #14 Posted December 12, 2010 I'm really sorry to hear about the fire. Glad to hear that everyone is. Stay warm this winter.
Monty Posted December 12, 2010 Author #15 Posted December 12, 2010 Glad the damage is managable and everyone is alright! Crack open one of the faucets in the house and lets the water run slightly and the lines won't freeze that way. No need to have to redo a wall and broken water lines! Dave I wish we could. He has a well, and there is no power. The public utilities opened the fuse up at the transformer, otherwise, I could have opened the two breakers that were affected, and turned it back on. Not much wiring was burnt. We did close up the wall with OSB, so the snow and critters can't get in.
Sleeperhawks Mechanic Posted December 12, 2010 #16 Posted December 12, 2010 So sorry to hear of the fire, but so thankful that it was localized as it was and no one was hurt. Great job on getting the fire out so quickly. Our thoughts and prayers sent. Bobbie and George
PBJ Posted December 12, 2010 #17 Posted December 12, 2010 So glad to hear all were safe and the house not a total loss. My ex had a fire in the two year old house that we raised our children in. She and my son got out safe but the house was a total loss.
gunkylump Posted December 12, 2010 #18 Posted December 12, 2010 Any chance of hooking up a compressor and blowing the lines out? Add some anti freeze to the traps and toilets..... Glad your kids are ok Monty! Everything will be fine with time! gunk
Monty Posted December 12, 2010 Author #19 Posted December 12, 2010 The landlord said she is going to call the plumber and take care of it.
b2dad Posted December 12, 2010 #20 Posted December 12, 2010 Sorry to hear this Monty and if there's anything we can do, please let us know. Will be glad to come over and help. Really glad no one was hurt. I assume the dog was ok too? Don
kj5ix Posted December 13, 2010 #21 Posted December 13, 2010 Wow Monty glad you were there close to help, and that everyone got away unhurt. That is the best of it; the family is intact. You could ( if you have one ) use a generator to back feed the house at a dryer port to get the well pump on and drained for the time being.
Eck Posted December 13, 2010 #22 Posted December 13, 2010 Monty, So sorry to hear of this. Happy though, that your son . family are all OK. If there is anything we can do let us know. Eck
99silver Posted December 13, 2010 #23 Posted December 13, 2010 Well.... the family is close for Christmas just like the old days. Keep looking for the blessings, I'm glad you are all safe.
cecdoo Posted December 13, 2010 #24 Posted December 13, 2010 Man, really sorry to hear about the fire, but glad everyone is ok. Hopefully the damage will be pretty easy to fix and I hope in spite of the fire that you and your family have a nice holiday! Craig
