I would like to install a good volt meter on my 89 VR, for I understand the dash meter does not provide a reliable read. Is that correct? So I would appreciate some good suggestions as to what there is out there and where a good place to install it. And any other related suggestions?

Im selling one I bought new last spring but never mounted it. It will fit a 1st gen's dash perfectly. I think Snaggletooth has one on his 1st gen. Heres the link:

There is also this unit. If I was going to step up, I'd go with the Kisan charge guard for more features. And quality.

The one I used is tough. Three seasons now of all weather riding with no issues and subzero temps in storage.

Thats the unit that I have for sale now. I never installed it. Too much trouble to install on a 2nd gen. I just didnt want to cut into the dash, but it would work great on a 1st gen dash panel.
