I note from that website you posted that the reduction to $6.95/hr from $8.00/hr is for "Liquor Servers"... not just "servers". From reading that ....and correct me if I'm wrong... it means if you work in a place that serves food only (no liquor) then you get $8 but if the place goes out and gets a liquor lic and starts serving beer & wine then your wage is $6.95 .

I really do not know the answer to this, but I would guess, that you are correct.

I guess the govn't thinks that drunk people tip better!!! :sign20:

Even at Micky D's.:happy-emoticon:

In England ,outside of London which has been "Americanized", Tiping (or trying to) is practicaly an insult. You will get the money given back to you.

When I say Americanized I mean American style tipping as opposed to European style where the tip is automaticaly included in the bill.

$2.00.

I'm pretty cheap so I dont' go out to eat very often, but when I do I almost always leave $2.

There are some exceptions. I took a ride down to Brown County IN and stopped at Cheese Burger In Pardise (great food) We got seated and sat there in the middle of the place, waiter and waitress walking by like we were not even there. I was almost to the point of leaving when a waitress walked up a asked if we had been waited on. I did not get upset with her. I just explained we had been waiting for about 20min. She apoligized and took our order. We were almost finished when she came out with the manager and told use the meal was on the house minus drinks. So here is what I did. Drinks were like $10 and the meal was $30. I paid for the drinks and gave the waitress $30.

A lot of very interesting comments about this topic...wow! One of them that really sticks out is the wages for servers in the USA. We here in Canada have a minimum wage (and I know you all in the US do also and it varies a lot). A server here makes at the very least $8 an hour. Now in comparison, one might think that's a lot but around here it really isn't. The thing is though, there are a lot of people working a variety of "service" related jobs who make exactly the same wage, work just as hard, deal with people all day long (and many of you know what that's like), put up with all kinds of crap from their employers (a lot of it against the labour relations act) .... and get no tips at all. It's just not fair.

Damn - I can't believe the wages some people are earning on t'other side of the globe. Here in Oz, a 16 year old serving Big Macs and fries at Macca's would be earning a minimum of $12 and hour. And that's slave wages. A good labourer here is good for $25 an hour. Me - I work 2.5 days a week for a government agency and get paid $38 an hour. Rest of the time I earn $100 an hour for 'professional services' - tax free.

I think tipping amounts vary depending on where you live. LA or New York, costs are high and tipping is probably higher.

I live in the great plains. Farmers, pickup trucks, small towns. Even in the local "big" town of Peoria (100,000 people Wa HOO!) costs are pretty low compared to bigger metro areas.

I try to tip around 15%, but will leave a penny if service is really bad. Like one person said, I don't blame the wait staff if the food is bad, IF they make an effort to fix the problem. IF the food arrives cold, that is usually the problem with the waiter/waitress.

I will tip more for exceptional service. If the service is real bad or real good I will tell the manager/owner. Bad service means I probably won't go back to that place ever again.

Lately I have decided that the first hint of bad service, I get up and walk out. Will pay for drinks if they have been served, but there are too many choices to put up with crap.

I have just returned from England after spending some time there visiting family, ( I was born there) I tip as I do here, when I visit home, and I'll tell ya, they are not insulted at all, in fact the opposite, thet are delighted, and are delighted to look after you for the rest of the evening. When I lived in England (left in 81)you would ask the bar keep to have one himself, it was customary to take 10 pence and put it in a tip jar. They do the same today except now it is about 50 pence (inflation) but you only offer that if you are flush (pay day) most of the time you don't tip, or at least never use too.

I leave the "Tip of the Day" , "third horse in the fourth race" ! :rotf:

No Seriously , wife and I believe we tip well for services rendered . We also believe to tip the person whom deserves the tip . I have also left the insulting penny , as well as personally making sure the waitress gets a separate tip for their effort .I know there are other working in the background and tips are shared amongst all sometimes . That's all well and good , but wife and I want to make sure the next time we come in ,is that that waiter/waitress gives us great service .

My aunt own a restaurant in Alaska , several of them to be exact , while my mom and aunts were waitresses or cooks . I've seen my mom and aunt bring home $1,000.00 in tips in a shift every once in a while because of their outstanding service .

Now what burns me is that the restaurants automatically add in the gratuities . To me that's asking/taking money without permission . If I want to give them the tip , I will do it myself .

While in Vegas , I hit a jackpot on the $1 slots . Wife and I were budgeting ourselves before hand . The waitress that was serving us our beer was outstanding . I tipped her somewhere around $200.00 the next time she came around . Like I said , she gave us "Great" service ! She after the tip , followed us all around the casino , everywhere on the floor during her shift the whole time we stayed there and served us personally . She made sure we always had a fresh ice cold beer or other beverage . Also let us know some of Vegas's secretes . We were there for a week and must say , we tipped her in the neighborhood of $1,200.00 for that week . I did mention we hit a jackpot didn't I ?
